Rocas Roja Beach Hotel Faralya

I would like to lodge a formal complaint regarding the rude treatment I received by owner in Rocas Roja. I am writing this comment to bring everyone’s notice that me and my boyfriend have been volunteers at Rocas Roja for one week and experienced unpleasant incident during our stay.
We had been applying to new volunteering opportunities through Workaway. However, hosts have already found their volunteers due to peak season. Some host gave number of Rocas Roja said that this place needed volunteers.
We started to face a lot of issues the day we worked. We performed each task with full hard work and work in extra hours too if there is any need for it. (According to Workaway, volunteers can work at most 5 hours and 2 days off, but we usually worked more than 6 hours a day)
It occurred approximately in third days. In the morning, we had talked owner’s wife before we started our shift. We said due to lack of employees and working hours, it was hard to keep working as volunteers. We demaned both more volunteers and employers. She was nice and listened to us. She said if your shift was over, you could stop working immediately. However, it didn’t happen reality. I finished my work at 10.00 p.m. and were about to leave. Yet, the owner came and used offensive language. We tried to say that there were many tasks that are impossible to complete without his guidance and lack of employers. Manager’s language in the workplace does not reflect a professional attitude towards us. He didn’t listen to us instead arranged meeting for next day. During the meeting, keeping in view the above-mentioned circumstances we request him to take strict action about lack of employers and volunteers. But nothing was solved during the meeting. It was getting very difficult to work in such an environment and it was affecting our performance. At this stage, we decided the quit volunteering. Notwithstanding, we kept working to support employers for 2 days. After the meeting the owner was more polite and agreeable. We even had thoughts of not leaving and bringing more volunteers. Even though we prepared schedule among volunteers, we weren’t able to meet the targets. After two days we informed the lady who manages we do not want to work anymore. She was nice, sincerely apologized and offer us 1-2 days to stay as guest. We accepted. The first day we stayed as “guest” at their place, the owner came to our table. Owner has a temperament to misbehave with us and seemed to be bias towards us. He kept yelling at us and put the blame on us. He said we would pay everything we had ate. Then yelled and said “Get out my place!” Although we had high expectations and promised to be volunteer for one month, we weren’t able to maintain cordial attitude at this place. He has a very laid-back approach. He does not seem to care about proper provision of information, appropriate fulfilment of volunteer requirements, etc, he rushes everything and burdens the team(“volunteers”) with all the work. This unprofessional way of dealing did not only lower the morale of mine, but another volunteer we brought and worked enormously felt the same. We came there to work for free. Me and my boyfriend work in different field and definitely do not need money. Our only aim was to help without taking any money.
I hope that this explains our feelings and disappointment with what has occurred, I would not like this to happen to me or any other volunteer and hope that corrective measures are taken swiftly.
