BULL Costa Canaria & SPA - Only Adults Mini-hotel

The hotel itself was beautiful and well-maintained and in lovely surroundings, and Carmen on Reception and Jose in the bar/restaurant were fabulous. However I encountered several issues that significantly impacted my experience—particularly regarding food and guest services. I informed the hotel in advance that I am intolerant to both gluten and eggs and made it clear that most gluten free bread contained eggs so they needed to really take this into account (as they didn't seem hugely interested or understanding). On arrival i was told to see someone on entering the restaurant, i did, he told me to ask a waiter, i did, this was pointless, it was clear my message wasn't understood an i was given some bread without a list of the ingredients so who knew if it contain egg. While other gluten-free options were provided, there was no clear information about whether these items also contained egg. This lack of transparency made it difficult and stressful to make safe food choices. For example, I was offered gluten-free cakes, but without any ingredient details, I could not be sure they were egg-free. This made them unsuitable for me and left me with very limited options. The GF cakes when touched were also solid as if stale - not great! i should also point out that a separate toaster wasn't provided so contamination of these products was easy. Additionally, the snack bar was closed upon arrival due to a refurb, leaving only the pizza bar (unsuitable for my dietary needs) and the main restaurant (where i encountered the dietary issues previously noted), where food could not be taken outside. Guests were even reprimanded for attempting to do so, but there was no signage to say otherwise. If you're lounging by the pool, it's unreasonable to expect guests to get fully dressed just to sit inside a restaurant for lunch and its wrong to reprimand when you have no signage stating it is an issue. When the snack bar eventually reopened (although my husband thought the food was fantastic), the food options were even less allergy-friendly and it operated on limited hours. If you missed the food windows, you had to wait until your designated dinner time—ours was at 8 p.m.—or go without unless you ate pizza, the service in the snack bar was also atrocious, repeatedly. As a result, I was left with very limited options and essentially lived on chips for the week, which was disappointing given the hotel’s otherwise high standards. There were also a few other issues that detracted from the experience: We were told off for placing a towel over the balcony, despite there being no signage indicating this was not allowed. The suggested alternative—a clothes airer provided—was too small to accommodate towels. On one occasion, housekeeping failed to leave bottled water in the room.
