Reviews
Upon arrival, my friend and I found the door locked. While we had received a code for a small locker outside, which should have contained the key to the door and our room, the locker was empty. We called the owner, who was rude and repeatedly recited the code for the empty locker. He then proceeded to yell the code for another locker continuously, so focused on it that it took several minutes for him to realize that locker was also empty. He simply hung up, leaving us stranded. After a few minutes, a woman appeared on the other side of the door, talking on the phone. Once she finished, she opened the door for us. It was unclear what her role was at the guesthouse—employee, daughter, or housekeeper? She handed us the keys and offered us to pay immediately. The amount she requested didn't match our booking.com reservation, but we assumed they would contact us the next day if anything was owed for our second night. She stated that issuing a receipt was "not her business." Only upon request did we receive a handwritten note as a "receipt." At least, we were relieved to have paid in person and avoided the owner's preferred (but in our opinion, risky and manipulative) payment option of leaving the money in the room upon departure.
The room itself was adequate, but the small fridge didn’t work, was filthy, and smelled terrible. The bathroom was also only superficially cleaned.
The kitchen was in an even worse state. It reeked, especially from the unplugged and equally unclean fridges we were forced to use for storing our food. Pots and pans were nowhere to be found, making cooking hard. We could only improvise with water from a kettle.
On the afternoon of our second day, we tried repeatedly to contact the owner to clarify any outstanding payments. The reception was mostly unmanned (during the day, let alone the night), so personal contact was impossible. When all our calls went unanswered, we sent an SMS requesting a call back to resolve the matter. We finally reached him the next day, just before leaving. My friend barely managed to say a few words before he hung up. Yelling and hanging up seem to be his standard way of dealing with guests.
We had to leave with unresolved issues as the reception was also unmanned until 9:30 AM.
Following this, we received threatening and hateful emails in response to my friend's negative review.
In summary: poor cleanliness and amenities, but most importantly, poor organization. It's unacceptable for guests to have to chase after the owner to resolve any issues. What's even more unacceptable is the owner's macho and disrespectful behavior towards his guests.
Late in the evening, when the night is just around the corner last thing you need is to go away with nothing from the place you have trusted.
Whould have been ok if the owner would not have gave our confirmed and live reservation away saying "called us in the morning and we did not call him back". (No text no mail on top of an unreceived call.) To make things worse we were told over the phone after calling him multiple times. On site. At night. Literally standing on the doorsteps.
It was really disappoibting and somewhat troublesome to find another means among the all-booked hotels to spend the night.
The worst is yet to come.
When we complained about this he raged at us. Blaming us for not being fair by not calling back.
Great value for money. We had a fully equipped apartment on the ground floor.
Spotless clean. May 2017
