Hotel Malcesine in Malcesine

Stayed at Hotel Malcesine recently and I can honestly say it’s the worst hotel I’ve stayed in yet and I’m well travelled. The room was vile and dirty, with pills dropped behind the toilet, floor covered in other people’s hair (multiple colours… so not the one couple). I ended up using the bridal party slippers I was gifted to wear around the room as I couldn’t bear to touch the floor, and within seconds the soles were black. It was a mezzanine style, but the stairs and tiny hallway were filthy so you hated to walk across with bare feet it at night to use the bathroom. The spare pillows and linens had muddy boot prints on them, so we made so with the one thin pillow on the bed. The sofa was absolutely grim and covered in stains and dirt, we only used it to put our suitcases on in the end. I was so grossed out by our room that we didn’t even unpack our clothes and spent the week living from our suitcase. It’s the first time I’ve actually checked more than once for bedbugs in the bed and sofa as the room was vile. At the end of each day I actually dreaded coming back to our hotel and I’ve never felt that way before anywhere I’ve previously stayed. Unfortunately breakfast wasn’t much better, the coffee and juices were undrinkable and the food was just terrible, so I just ate fruit and drank water the entire week. The only reason I’ve added a star was because the reception staff were lovely and kind, but I will not be returning. I cannot believe this is a three star hotel. If you had told me it was a hostel, I would believe you. We stayed one night at Laura Christina Tennis Hotel up the road, which was far superior and the breakfast was lovely.

The only thing this hotel has going for it is its location. It’s dated. Our room was awful and for €160 a night I expected more. Room was split level with steep steps up to the beds. Furniture was ancient. The shower had almost no light. It is very tired and in need of complete renovation.
