Reviews
Always a dream – a castle residence at the highest level!
This is our second time staying in the family suite of the castle residence at the Hotel Am Schloss in Aurich – and we were absolutely thrilled again! We were impressed by our stay last year, and this time, too, everything was simply perfect. Although we had the same room as last time, this time we would like to specifically review the castle residence itself.
The location is ideal – quiet, yet just a few steps from the pedestrian zone. The suite is modern, stylish, and very simply furnished, exactly to our taste. We would particularly like to emphasize the cleanliness: everything was spotless! The service at breakfast was also very warm and attentive.
We feel completely at home here and have already booked again for Christmas – that speaks for itself! Many thanks to the entire team – we would love to come back!
P.S. I already rated the Hotel Am Schloss with 5 stars in December 2024.
Great, extensive breakfast buffet... fried eggs, scrambled eggs, and omelets are freshly prepared upon request.
Breakfast isn't served in the residence, but in the neighboring Hotel am Schloss - is that a problem? No, not a long walk, just a quick walk across the street 😊.
Please note: Parking is scarce - either pay to park in the underground garage behind the residence, or patiently drive around the block until you find one...
August 2025: Still a top recommendation for a stay in the heart of East Frisia!
The location on the edge of the old town is ideal. The Residenz is often marketed as a separate hotel, but it's just the unmanned annex of the Hotel am Schloss opposite. That's okay, but you should be aware. The reception is across the street.
There aren't enough parking spaces for all hotel guests. If they're full, the only options are the paid parking zone or the hotel's own parking lot for €9.
The hotel's food was really bad. The bar didn't even have standard cocktails. Instead, they offered strange in-house concoctions. A classic daiquiri didn't work even on the second attempt. That's not four-star quality! A glance over the restaurant buffet as we walked revealed the worst sins of frozen food.
Breakfast was also a special experience. After a bus full of retirees had already departed and presumably had breakfast, we found the breakfast buffet comparatively straightforward. There was only one slice or piece of many things – if any – and refills weren't promptly or consistently available. The only beverages available were tea or filter coffee (from a moderately clean 1-liter thermos). Eggs are generally prepared upon request, but the person in charge would have to be present for that. Scrambled eggs were out.
In terms of atmosphere, the restaurant and breakfast area is unparalleled. It wasn't simply poorly decorated. Rather, it seemed as if someone had explicitly gone to great lengths to find every conceivable color or pattern that definitely didn't match the others. And I'm red-green colorblind, so I didn't notice some of the gaffes – like the green LED lighting on the ceiling – that intensely.
The breakfast is also superbly presented. Omelettes are even available upon request. I was completely satisfied!
With half-board there were unfortunately some discrepancies between the menu and the kitchen at dinner. 3 x pork out of 4 evenings, fish dishes were o.k.
Still room for improvement in service.
