Parador de Alcaniz

Beautiful old chateau. Food not so excellent.

Great hotel with good views, nice restaurant and friendly service

In the more pure tradition of Paradores, this is located in the place of a medieval castle that once was managed by Calatrava military monks.

The castle of Alcañiz was built in the 12th century by the Order of Calatrava, a Christian military order founded in the 12th century to fight against the Muslims. The castle was used as a fortress, palace and prison throughout the centuries. In the 19th century, the castle was abandoned and fell into ruins.

In 1968, the Spanish government decided to restore the castle and convert it into a Parador de Turismo. The restoration was completed in 1973 and the hotel opened its doors that same year.

This is place for some of the most relevant moments in Spain history (La Concordia de Calatrava) that can be considered a turning point in the creation of the current Kingdom of Spain.

As usual the service and food are simply top notch.

The castle is located 5 minutes away from the Plaza de España in the old town, where you can visit the big Santa Maria Mayor church, the city council and the underground tunnels and ice house, all well worth the visit. But be aware the castle is on the top of a hill overlooking the town, so be ready for some exercise coming back to the Parador and bring some confortable shoes....

We spent a long weekend in the Hotel and thoroughly enjoyed our time there and the food.

An amazing regal experience. Our first Parador hotel. Didn't eat in the restaurant but had a club sandwich in the bar which was a meal in itself!
Outstanding staff throughout who gave top service all the way 👏
Only negative was Google Maps wanting to take us through the back streets - probably the most direct route on paper! - both to and from. Helpful locals escorted / put us on the best route. 😳

Another absolutely fabulous Parador Hotel in Alcañiz from start to finish!!
A beautiful historic Convent building attached to the 12th century castle offers spectacular views over Alcañiz and surrounding countryside.
So clean with friendly and helpful staff made our stay (4 people) very enjoyable.
The walk down to the Historic Center is only a few minutes (depending on how fit you are a bit longer to get back up the hill and stairs).

Beautiful place to stay.
The Paradores I think are always an excellent choice. This one is a heavily restored palace with a lot of charm. The rooms are spacious and comfortable.

Fabulous setting and friendly staff. Excellent food for dinner and breakfast. Only downside was noise from rooms above and plumbing! Some guests are sooooooo inconsiderate.

Amazing restored castle converted into a hotel though the oldest and interesting parts, like the rare and ancient pictures in the church and Homage tower, have to be seen in a guided tour.
