Andrew Newman and his team at Mercure Brisbane King George Square made my stay and first time in Brisbane as friendly and hospitable as possible.

From valeting my car to small niggling issues with the room, Andrew was the man to the rescue! He did so without fuss and with the utmost professionalism, hospitality and most importantly care.

The rooms, pool, gym and facilities are brilliant and well maintained. The rooms are modern, bathrooms are clean and well presented.

All the reception, concierge and back of house people are well mannered, dressed and will always look after you or give you some tips to enjoy your stay.

I would not hesitate to recommend families, friends and colleagues to consider staying here in Brisbane. I know this won't be my last time in Brisbane and this hotel and look forward to being back sooner rather than later.

Forget the star rating of the hotel or any other reviews. The staff cannot magically rebuild the hotel into hotels at far more expensive price points. It is the customer service and the way things are rectified and sorted that I consider more important - and the team led by Andrew Newman at Mercure Brisbane King George Square have excelled upon my expectations.

Enjoyed a couple of nights here in mid August.

Unfortunately the rooftop restaurant wasn’t open.

Other than that, the facilities were good (enjoyed the pool even though the weather was at the cooler end of Queensland expectations), my room was quiet and well appointed. Arrival chocolate was a nice touch. Plenty of cafes, restaurants, supermarkets, shops and tourism things immediately nearby.

I graced this hotel with my presence for an academic conference and oh, what an 'experience' it was! First off, their 'stellar' housekeeping seems to think that leg hairs on the bed sheets are the newest trend – perhaps they're trying to make guests feel more 'at home'? And while I won't bless you with the photo of said hairs, those sheets had all the telltale signs of a restless night's sleep by the previous guest, including the pièce de résistance: red stains that were suspiciously reminiscent of blood (photo for your viewing 'pleasure').

Moving on, their 'state-of-the-art' bathroom took me on a nostalgic journey back to the rural Chinese guesthouses of the 1980s. A true vintage experience! And the kettle? It was so filthy it could probably serve as a prop in a horror movie. All in all, if Australia's definition of 'quality' equates to overpriced hotels with underwhelming service, then this place nailed it!

In this 'luxurious' establishment, they don't even provide disposable slippers. Can you imagine? Beyond cost-cutting, I'm struggling to think of any worthy excuse for such an omission. For such shoddy service standards, what on earth justifies such astronomical prices in Australia? Thicker facial skin? Or more superior than the rest of us mere mortals? And please, spare me the 'hygiene policy' excuse. The hotel's not-so-secret practices of using bath towels to wipe toilets and not changing sheets for guests are well-known – no need to pretend. Most hotels do it, and yours is no exception. But let's not put all the blame on the cleaning staff; this reeks of management issues. I suggest you venture out more. Australia might remain unchanged, but the world has evolved. Not every country offers exorbitant wages to manual laborers to the point where the common folk can barely make ends meet.

Last but not the least, the reception appears to be in a perpetual state of hibernation. At around 10 in the morning, my attempts to reach them were met with five minutes of unwavering silence. Even upon changing channels, the result was an echoing void. Perhaps their attentions have pivoted exclusively to welcoming fresh faces, neglecting the very patrons already within their grasp. It's quite astonishing, isn't it? Can a singular pandemic truly bring the robust Australian economy to its knees, rendering it so frail and susceptible? Plus that the elevator is horrible…

If you give me a whole morning, I would be willing to write a full article of reviewing this hotel and it’s service in more details.

It was ok, comfortable enough but a bit disappointing given the 280 plus price tag for the night. Staff were friendly and it's a great location but here's some of the shortfalls experienced:

Bins not changed overnight, do not disturb sign still meant cleaners cleaned my door so it banged, dirty wine glasses in the room, next doors dirty roomservice dishes out the front of our room was there over 24 hrs, no mini bar but you can order a drink to the room with a delivery fee, but you can't bring a drink down from the bar upstairs yourself, if you want to swim you must be happy to be in full view of all the afterwork staff drinking at the rooftop bar in full sight. No healthy food options to order.

I would have told the staff on checkout but they didn't ask how the stay was.

Relaxing, spacious and spotlessly clean

Couldn't fault the Mercure during our two night visit. The staff, all the way from management, through to reception and the cleaners were courteous and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble for them.

The room was excellent - spotlessly clean and ample supplies of all that we needed like shampoo, soap, towels, cups etc.

Location is close to everything you would want for a city getaway.

Don't use the phone even for local calls, you might be in for a shocker...

The location is close to the city. The staff are kind. But the cleanliness of the hotel was full of disappointment. I had to ask for a room clean upon arrival due to the dust everywhere, especially on the shelves above the fridge and desk. The staff kindly cleaned the room again. But then the room started to smell, especially the bathroom. It seemed like a dirty, sticky cloth was used to wipe. Flies were everywhere in the room and the aisle, and they kept coming like somebody in the hotel was raising them. Then the bed sheet got stained, and I had to ask to change it before bed. It was full of surprises, and I don’t recommend spending time and money here unless it improves or you have absolutely no other option.

The amenities were provided but no dental kit.. why

Just spent 4 nights. Such a wonderful location. Front desk staff and concierge were wonderful, helpful and most obliging.
Breakfast buffet at $42pp was totally overpriced for value and choices.
Room service tray remained in the corridor for 2 days without collection.

Check in lounge looks classy and the hotel is in an excellent location! Apart from that, there’s really nothing to brag about. Rooms are old and tired. Bathroom is cramped and old. The hairdryer doesn’t even work (it’s those old, truly archaic ones that are stuck to the wall haha). Had to call housekeeping twice to get an actual/proper hairdryer sent up. Stay here if you just need a quick overnight resting spot.

The restaurant is awesome. Limited choices but very well executed and friendly helpful staff.
The rooms are simple, but need maintenance and the cleaning is very basic.
Central location and the food and staff make up for any gripes.
