Carathotel Basel/Weil am Rhein

The open-air parking is free, and the hotel has a very classical vibe — it feels like stepping back into the 1990s. The room door uses a traditional key instead of a key card, and the furniture clearly has been used for many years. I truly admire the German spirit of thriftiness.

However, there were some unpleasant experiences: in the middle of the night, I noticed some flying insects in the corner of the ceiling. They came in different sizes — some large, some small — and even under the pillow we found a few. My child was too scared to sleep. I reported the issue to the front desk, but since it was already late, changing rooms and packing again felt too troublesome, so we decided to stay.

Unfortunately, my child barely slept, and we almost missed our plans the next day. The pillow was also uncomfortable…

I didn’t want to leave a negative review, but I’m really disappointed this time. I won’t be returning — best of luck to you.

The Worst Experience Ever

My stay at this hotel was an absolute disaster from start to finish. I can confidently say it was the worst experience I’ve ever had in any accommodation.

Location: The location was terrible, far from any main attractions or conveniences. It felt isolated. Also it was so difficult to find any transportation

Service: There was no service at all, and there was no sense of hospitality or care for the guests.

Breakfast: Breakfast was some how okay but poorly managed. There weren’t enough seats for guests, and I had to wait for an unreasonably time just to sit down. It was a frustrating way to start the day.

Room Amenities: The room lacked basic facilities. There was no FRIDGE to store my medicine, which was incredibly inconvenient, and no minibar or even complimentary coffee or tea. For a so-called 4-star hotel, this is absolutely unacceptable.

Cleanliness: Room cleaning was non-existent. No one came to clean or offer fresh towels during our stay, rusty table lamp were in the room and a dirty side lamp shades were in the room

Elevators: Only one elevator was functioning, and it was painfully slow. I spent more time waiting for the elevator than I’d like to admit.

Overall: I don’t know how this hotel is rated as a 4-star property. It doesn’t deserve even half of that. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone under any circumstances. It was a complete disappointment on every level. Save yourself the trouble and book elsewhere.

Huge and rather old hotel with an odd Mexican themed restaurant. The portions and alcohol servings where absolutely gigantic so be ware of ordering anything more than a main course unless you are a big eater. A con for us was very loud music in all the eating areas. The breakfast was excellent though.
The interiors where heavily perfumed, including the room which resulted in us heaving to sleep with open windows enjoying the traffic noise the whole night long. The location is very industrial-suburban.
Friendly staff.
Will not come again.
