Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna Joensuu

Very nice hotel in a center of city. Friendly service. Nice restaurants and grocery in same building, not to mention alcohol store around the corner. Not the newest hotel but quite well kept. No complaints. Worked for my holiday needs perfectly.

We stayed here while in Joensuu for the Biathlon World Cup in nearby Kontiolahti. On some of the other reviews, there were comments about the lack of character. Yes, it does lack this, but be honest - this is not what you are visiting Joensuu! NEGATIVES - the are only two negatives. The first was that the bathroom was VERY small and in need of updating. Yes, I am from the States but I visit Europe two to four times per year so I am not unaccustomed to European style hotel rooms/bathrooms. The other was that on each morning, there was no service to straighten up the rooms. Fortunately we were able to grab towels and toilet paper from the cart and it wasn't the worst problem to have but still surprising. POSITIVES - there are LOTS of these: - In the weeks running up to our visit, I had quite a few questions that I couldn't find answers to online. Each time I emailed the hotel, they responded VERY promptly with the information I needed - The location is excellent, right on the town's main square and easy walking distance to an array of restaurants, shopping and ten minutes from the train station. And for those going to the World Cup in Kontiolahti, the motor coach shuttle to the arena picks up and drops off in the main square, next to the hotel. - The staff was professionally friendly and helpful in all aspects - front desk, breakfast, cleaning crew - The breakfast buffet was delicious and well-stocked. Be VERY aware of the closing time as they start breaking down the buffet AT closing time! - The beds were VERY comfortable (a major plus as my wife and I both have dodgy backs) Bottom line, if/when we return to Kontiolahti, we'll be staying here again.

Teníamos la habitación Superior Queen. Está bien y es espaciosa. Nos dieron la habitación con balcón y una vista estupenda al parque y la plaza del mercado, pero hay que pedirlo e insistir, ya que lo pedí por e-mail y luego tuve que volver a pedirlo en recepción. Como llegamos un domingo por la tarde, supongo que estaba en recepción el empleado más inútil, ya que se equivocó con el número de habitación, con el número de noches que habíamos reservado, y aún en más cosas. Al final, después de tener que volver a la recepción porque no funcionaba la tarjeta, me dio una buena habitación. El desayuno está bastante bien, pero me dejó sorprendido que toda la leche que tienen es sin lactosa. Supongo que se consume mucho en Finlandia, ya que se ve mucho en el supermercado. La posición del hotel es inmejorable: en pleno centro, con restaurantes y un súper en el mismo edificio. El garaje vale 12 € al día.

Very happy with our stay in a standard queen room, felt like a more luxurious room tbh. Breakfast had everything you could ask for and the customer service was splendid. The sauna facilities were included in the price, was a big plus to find jacuzzi and steam sauna there as well. Beds were very comfortable!

Nice, quiet hotel in central location. Next to market square and close to the river.

It’s a good hotel with very favorable location. The rooms are small but cozy. There is basically everything you need but… breakfast is not that good. There are all sort of things but in the end not that tasty and I come out from the breakfast still hungry. And it’s easy to get lost in the hotel.

A nice hotel in a good location. Room price includes access to sauna department which has a nice yacuzzi. Right in the middle of Joensuu, bonus points for a friendly 24/7 reception.
