Reviews
In our case the cleanness was bad. The beds, floor and bathroom were cleaned but not so the dustbin, wardrobe (falling appart and smelling awful, same for the desk), the ceiling must have been covered with mould (now dried but in all shades of grey), ceiling and wall were home to a dosent insect cocoons and last but not least in front of our bundgalow was a three level dumpside (consisting of organic, plastic and construction rubble)... Therefore, a mixed experience.
Probably one of the most stunning locations on the island, every bungalow has the best view, the food at the restoraunt is pretty good, and it's almost directly on the beach!
The family that owns the place are awesome, worked really hard to make us feel welcome, and helped sort us through our own personal chaos of multiple cross bookings and weird schedules with patience and smiles on their faces.
Probably some of the best room prices on the island, ~1,000 baht for a private fan bungalow with a king size bed, full bathroom with heated shower, hammock on the porch, and lots of room inside.
Kayak rentals, and lounging chairs on the beach beneath the beautiful trees. Right next door to Calypso Scuba for easy mask and snorkel rentals.
It is a hell of a walk to the main island hub, though doable if you're in shape, lots of hills and switchbacks (bring water!). The resort doesn't have a shuttle service (mom and pop operation, so they don't have the excess time to also run a taxi service.) taxi and scooter rentals are probably your easiest option.
I absolutely love this place, we extended our stay by three days we loved it so much, and will definitely stay here again if ever I return to Koh Tao.
Firstly, some of the staff are kind, but the manager and owner are rude. The rooms are nothing short of old and dirty. The ceiling fan was so dusty and dirty that we chose to sleep with the windows open. The only available lamp has clearly never been dusted and had exposed wiring. I wish I could post the photos. There are no amenities, just two old dry towels. The lighting is horrible. It was a steep climb to the room but view was good. The arm of the chair on the porch fell off when my fiancé rested on it. The food was horrible. I ordered fried chicken and got processed chicken and clearly (Tyson) frozen nuggets. We ordered scrambled eggs for breakfast and got sunny side up. My fiancé and I ordered the same basic breafast. He was served almost immediately; my food came about 20 minutes later and after later arrivers were served. I had to ask for it twice because they kept forgetting. Also,I sent my bread back because it was not toasted. I kindly asked for toasted. After reminding the server, I got it back about 10 minutes later with soggy edges. Fortunately while walking along the beach, we discovered a very nice hotel/restaurant next door called 'Lub D.' It has a variety of wonderful, freshly prepared food and beverage choices, a great view, and very nice wait staff.
Finally, this place (Family Tanote) accepts CASH ONLY. You would need to pay a taxi to drive you to the ATM. So, come prepared if you dare.
Also be aware, food prices here are very high compared to the rest of Koh Tao, we got baked beans on toast for breakfast one morning and it was 2 slices of dry toast (no butter) with a very small dish of cold beans for 80 baht. Massaman curry in the evening was absolutely delicious though, and they were able to do tofu for vegetarian option in everything.
The staff working in restaurant are very nice too.
Overall, I think the fan room with cold water was good for a 1-2 night stay to really enjoy the sunrise and get the beach to yourself in the morning before the masses turn up. Water clarity for snorkeling in the morning was amazing too. But for a long term stay pick somewhere with AC and hot shower to be more comfortable.
