The Hotel is placed in the forest just outside of Ilmenau, Germany, on a private country road. Our initial view of the Hotel was from the side as this is how the road enters the property. After we parked, we walked to the front of the Hotel and saw its magnificent charm. The view from the Hotel toward their private property is a nice view. Statues and interesting places for children to explore and sit. The view, was something I took advantage of in the early mornings as I sat with our windows open to enjoy a cup of coffee and listen the the song birds greet me and my family. Our room was clean and pleasant in the newer part of the Hotel. The grand lobby is a glassed roof enclosure with two taxidermal wall mounts of birds and mammal heads. The indoor pool was something we enjoyed as not many guest occupied the Hotel at the time we visited. We also enjoyed the trails around the property. One trail took us up to a view point that overlooked the countryside. Here we climbed a long spiral stairway in a tower. The view was breathtaking. Our morning breakfast was enjoyable in the restaurant. I recommend this place. The Staff was especially helpful. They understood English very well. Side note: We stayed June 2012. The 'when did you travel?' option does not allow me to enter this older date. I have been following the new remodel of this place. I hope to return and see the NEW LOOK.

Modern rooms with very comfortable beds. Nice bathrooms with good water pressure. (we were on the top floor) Beautiful classic style building with antique style dining room. Both breakfast and dinner were exquisite. (we did not use their lunch option) Spa is top class, and the swimming pool one of the best I’ve seen. Not very deep but clean natural water. (No chlorine) Area is beautiful for taking hikes and enjoying nature. Big recommendation is hiking up to “Gaststatte Kickelhahn” where lunch is great and the view from the watchtower is spectacular. Would recommend for anyone looking for a high quality relaxed getaway 👌

Friendly staff, delicious dinners and a great spa. We stayed three nights and had a great time.

No water (ok that happens) so no shower or flushing from 5pm to check out time. While things happen, it was handled utterly unprofessionally. First of all why not call ahead of time to let customers know before so that they can make an informed decision? Second while water was provided I basically had to ask for it, it should have been instantly dispatched to all rooms.

Finally absolutely no will to "compensate" for such a disagreement. Offering diners or massages proactively would be the absolute ABC of any hospitality training, and would buy you a LOT of good will from customers.
I get that Germany is not exactly the staple of customer friendliness but helpless looks and passivity don't make the situation better. In fairness they did comp my diner, but I had to escalate the situation to a manager and felt terribly having to ask employees, which can't do anything about what amounts to a management & training problem.

On the plus side the location is wonderful, the spa well thought out and diner was pretty nice if not for the slow service.

The location is great, it's surrounded by woods. It's nice to walk around or hike a bit, especially with your dogs. However, don't try to take your dog inside the restaurant! It's not allowed. Both, the hotel and the restaurant used to be dog friendly, but not anymore. It's one thing for the hotel, definitely not nice, but a lot of hotels don't let you stay with your dog - it's like "whatever" for me. But the restaurant? To be honest, it's the ONLY restaurant that I know of in Germany, where I cannot take my dog inside to dine! I travel a lot with my dog all over Europe and I have NEVER been denied to enter a restaurant with her anywhere. Fyi my dog is 4kg, she doesn't shed (so no risk for allergic people) and when I take her inside a building she is in her bag (and stays there), in which I am even allowed to take her on a plane with me as a "pet in cabin".

So, a "dogs not allowed inside" sign is extremely disappointing, especially for a restaurant in this location. Since my dog is not welcome there I won't visit the restaurant either.

We had booked 5 days in a superior double room because the photos on the hotel's homepage and the reviews on TripAdvisor were promising. So we arrived with great expectations, but unfortunately left with mixed feelings. First the good: The staff is very friendly, the breakfast left nothing to be desired, the sauna area is enormous, the beds are comfortable and everything is very clean. We were dissatisfied: It was only when we checked in that we realized that our room was not in the historic building shown everywhere (there are only suites here), but in the outdated annex from the post-reunification period. The superior double room (under the roof, you have to like sloping ceilings) is very simple and annoyingly impractical: the sleeping area is very small due to the subsequent installation of a shower in the bathroom, and the reading lamps on the bed are mounted in such a way that you hit your head on them , the seating area was uncomfortable, there was no fridge and there was only minimal storage space in the bathroom, which was obviously designed by craftsmen and was cold when we arrived. In the “vital area” of the sauna we missed a bowl of fruit. We were really annoyed about the full body massage. It took place in an oversized, carelessly furnished and, above all, cold room, where we had to lie on our stomachs for 55 minutes despite being asked. After having dinner twice, we avoided the restaurant, which was evocatively named "Hirtenwiese" but was nevertheless furnished in an anonymous, uniform style, preferring to enjoy the local cuisine in Ilmenau, Gotha and Arnstadt. At breakfast we were surprised that dairy dishes, cheese and juices were served so cold that you basically couldn't taste anything. Maybe these are all just small things, but overall they are not appropriate for a hotel with this standard and price. What left us really disappointed was that the owners had no knack for design (see above). It fits that the entrance stairs are currently being rebuilt in the style of an allotment garden with cheap concrete blocks (porphyry is typical for the area), the meadow in front of the hotel is filled with countless stalls and the new parking lot is completely without trees or other plants (while the only wall decoration is in the room is a poster that encourages the guest to act ecologically). A pity!

The hotel is located in a wonderfully scenic area. Goethe could not yet enjoy the advantages of the hotel and stayed overnight 1.2. km from the hotel in a wooden hut. Our stay, on the other hand, was very comfortable, tastefully renovated rooms, modern and cozy restaurant, very large swimming pool, inviting outdoor railing and a breakfast buffet that left nothing to be desired. The service staff "on site" was very friendly, helpful and tried to compensate for the small disappointments about the decisions in the "background" that affected us but were not discussed and explained with us. But we hope that the team development will improve and we will be happy to stop by again.

Friendly arrival with a coffee offer on the lawn in front of the hotel. Rooms very clean and friendly! Super nice service and explanation in the wellness area with wonderful peace and good food. Breakfast buffet had everything you could want

After making a telephone inquiry in advance, we were told that you could come for ice cream until 6 p.m. When we wanted to eat ice cream there at 5:30 p.m., there was no ice cream for us, the kitchen supposedly didn't have any 🤨, it would be us via phone. We were given incorrect information and we left without stopping - the trip/trip was free and very annoying

For a short break without a long journey, we looked for and found the Berg & Spa Hotel Gabelbach. Anyone looking to slow down and get in touch with nature has come to the right place. It is somewhat hidden in the forest not far from Ilmenau and is perfect if you are looking for a few days of peace and relaxation. It is a good starting point for hikes, for example to the Goethehäuschen and Kickelhahn. The entire furnishings in the hotel are modern and appear very new. The rooms are spacious and the bathroom is very nicely designed. Some rooms have balconies. The beds are very comfortable. The reception was very friendly, which can be said for the staff throughout the hotel. We felt very comfortable. The breakfast leaves nothing to be desired. Large selection, including lots of healthy things. We felt particularly comfortable in the winter garden. The food in the restaurant was great! The hotel has a very nice wellness area with a swimming pool, sauna area and fitness room. There are many hiking trails in the area and the town of Ilmenau is not far away. The only point of criticism: We had appointments for a hot stone massage. When we showed up for the appointment, we were literally talked into a herbal stamp massage, which was not even remotely comparable to the hot stone in terms of price-performance ratio.
