Petra Segreta Resort & Spa

Great hotel with nice view but overall bad service.
We stayed in Petra Segreta for 4 nights during our honeymoon, and the greatest disappointment came upon our check-out. We were given a total bill with an extra of 400€ of charges that we did not make. We understand it was a mistake made by the staff, but for a 5-star hotel plus a Relais&Chateaux one, we would expect at least a proper and honest apology.

While booking and some of the reception staff are helpful and try their best, the place was a massive let down for us personally and here’s why.

After a pretty steep drive into the hills of San Pantaleo and the price point, you expect to be rewarded with amazing views and an exclusive experience…not the case!
The rooms are nicely designed inside, however the outside space for the deluxe was unusable: sitting in a cave like enclosure with no cushions on the stone bench felt like a very expensive punishment. Apparently this was the best room they had in the category and, seeing the neighbouring rooms, I can confirm it is indeed true…and scarry. We were showed another room (still with mostly walled views) for double the price…

The facilities around the pool are dated and unattended, old chairs and umbrellas, zero service and mostly no views. There is no outside lounge or bar where you can enjoy the views and drinks. The main focus is on their ‘Michelin restaurant’ (this is the name for it rather than the actual name😂). As a guest of the hotel they make sure you don’t bother their restaurant guests. We arrived late at night, were rushed inside and ‘welcomed’ by the restaurant staff by being shown a menu standing in the door and told we had 10min to order food like we were a bother. Chose to only have a aperitif platter and drink and were shown into a side corner of the terrace with a view of, guess what!!, a wall. No welcome drink, not even a glass of water. Very unfriendly, very unwelcoming, after paying a full day for nothing.

We made a second mistake after staying here with eating at the Terazza Osteria. The service was terrible, from the tone where you are met with a lot of ‘Nos’ for anything you ask for, to forgetting things we ordered and to the food which was extremely underwhelming and worth about a third of what they charge. The wine list has hilarious mark ups. While enjoying this sad dinner we were watching the ‘Michelin experience’ downstairs. Coming from quite a lot of fine dining and starred experiences, we were shocked how this place gets this reputation let alone stars…Two of the courses were a pot of simple risotto and a plate with tortellini 🤣 The main: piece of meat and some spinach…quite honestly that is offending at 220 a head. We did not even consider eating here as the breakfast was so bad (3 star quality), the restaurant so sad inside and the service generally so unprofessional and unfriendly, that I would have never even dared. We were happy we didn’t.
The restaurant itself has barely any views, no air, dark and low. Day service is not allowed outside (apparently because of the wasps, which are indeed plenty and nothing is done about it). Omelettes and pancakes at breakfast for extra 12eur🤣🤣 There is definitely no Michelin level coming through there!

In a nutshell, there is absolutely nothing justifying the 5 stars here nor the restaurant accolades. We had exponentially better service, facilities and food in most places we stayed in Sardinia over our many years of visiting the island. My guess is that this is an institution for old rich Italians in the area looking for a place to spend their money and meet.
If you have any appreciation for service and quality and want to enjoy this beautiful island, save yourself this mistake.

We stayed at Petra Segreta for our honeymoon - hoping to find a little piece of luxury and peace after a hectic lead up to our wedding. The website is beautiful and the top-end costs makes you think that this is the very highest quality hotel. Unfortunately they dont fully fulfil on the promise. They do not deliver the level which i would expect for the cost. I wouldnt recommend this hotel to someone visiting Sardinia.

1) The people working there are lovely when you talk to them, however the service isn't really good enough for the price point. We sat by the pool for 6 days, and only on the last day that someone asked if anyone at the pool wanted a drink. On nearly every day we sat in breakfast for around 15-20 mins until someone bought us a menu. Often nobody showed us to our table, and the table wasnt laid until we sat down (despite the resort being only 75% full).
2) The site is beautiful and has been well designed - however it isnt maintained to the level that is probably required by the price point. The grass next to the pool had a cat poo on it for the whole time we were there. The spa was closed for the whole week that we were there). The gym is nice - however it is tiny. It has 12kg dumbells, 2 running machines, a cable machine, and a cross trainer. This is fine - but not a proper gym facility.
3) The breakfast (along with water in the room) is the only thing that is included in the price. The breakfast looks great - but it is a lot of pastries, yoghurt and fruit - as well as some hot cooked food (sausages in tomato sauce, mushrooms and roast veg) which sits in the pots. My wife is coeliac and could eat very little of any of the food (including the cooked food). If you want an omlette or smoked salmon, or benedict then you will need to pay an extra 12EUR per person. I would expect this to be standard in a 5 star hotel not a paid for extra.
4) The hotel relies heavily on its high-quality restarurants. There are three of them. We had the 'Terrace' set menu for EUR85 (there is no other option). However because my wife was coeliac were only served 3 of the 5 starters, and 1 of the 3 desserts. We still paid the same. While this is the mid-level restaruant, the cheapest bottle of wine is c.EUR75.
5) we went for dinner at the micheline star fine dining restaurant. We paid EUR220 per head, plus wine. The food is very good and interesting. However even in this top top restaurant, the bread that they served was from a packet that could be bought in the supermarket. They said that this was because of concerns of cross contamination - however this is certainly the first michelin star restaurant that i have been to where this is the case.
6) There is no bar in this hotel where people gather in the evenings. There is a seating area next to the restaurant, but this is a weird place to sit as you are all around people eating their meals. So there is no real atmosphere anywhere in the hotel.
