Reviews
The good; staff were great. Pool was fantastic and the food at the restaurant was delicious (meals were not included, apart from breakfast and one dinner but we ate 3 dinners at the resort and all were great). Aqua size was fun and the free bottles water each day was great.
The not so good; the beach was pretty but a lot of rubbish. The pool bar menu for lunch and snacks was good but could only be eaten around the pool so if it was raining (which is was quite a bit) - you could not order and eat any of the tables around the bar upstairs). The free shuttles to the markets and town - often busy / booked out and would be great to be more frequent. Breakfast was fine, not great and the pool bar was often quite a wait to be served (a few more staff on would have helped immensely - so many “free drinks” with luxury escapes packages being ordered). Location - was fine - didn’t help it was low season in terms of things around that were open.
“The hotel is amazing. If you’re looking for peace, quiet, no kids, a long and uncrowded beach, then you’ve come to the right place. The biggest advantage of the hotel is its peaceful location, beautiful beach, and a wonderful swim surrounded by palm trees with a view of a paradise beach. The hotel is 5 stars, but let’s be honest, it’s a bit short of the full 5 stars, which is a shame because it has potential. What mildly surprised us, but didn’t ruin the holiday, was the very slow pace of meal service in the restaurant. I understand not rushing and savoring the meal, but waiting 45 minutes for dessert is definitely too long. The second issue is that I have dietary restrictions and cannot eat onions or garlic—every time I asked clearly if a dish could be made without those ingredients, but unfortunately, I ordered a soup once and there was onion in it, or a main dish that also had onion. The staff apologized, but what’s the point? What if I had an allergic reaction? This shouldn’t happen in a 5-star hotel. The room cleaning was very superficial; the shower was cleaned only once during our 2-week stay. I highly recommend the all-inclusive option, as during the day you don’t have to waste time, you can just order food while lying on your lounger, and the drink selection is huge, plus they have sparkling wine. One thing the hotel should definitely change is the bar’s opening hours— it opens only at 11:00, so if you go for an early breakfast, you have to wait a long time before you can get a coffee or even water. We had a situation where we were at the bar at 11:05, and we were told it wasn’t open yet, so we had to wait another 15 minutes for coffee. It’s similar with breakfast: it starts at 6:30, but when you arrive at that time, nothing is ready yet, so if you have an early excursion, you may not be able to eat properly. Nevertheless, I recommend it because of the peace and quiet—though sometimes in the evenings, there’s a lack of entertainment. We also had a New Year’s party, which was great, but for that price, there should have been at least some drinks included.”
Breakfast was another highlight, with a good variety of options and generous portion sizes that catered to different tastes. The hotel pool is massive and visually stunning, making it a great place to relax and unwind. However, I did notice that the pool could benefit from some maintenance, as there were a few stained tiles that took away from its otherwise impressive appearance.
On the downside, the rooms left much to be desired. They felt quite outdated and didn't have that fresh, inviting feel that you would expect from a hotel of this caliber. A renovation is definitely needed to bring the rooms up to par with the rest of the hotel.
One other thing to note is the hotel's location. It's quite far from the main attractions, shops, and restaurants. While the hotel does offer a free shuttle service a few times a week, the timing of the shuttles isn’t very convenient—you don’t get enough time to fully enjoy the markets or explore local restaurants.
Overall, The Haven in Khao Lak is a good choice if you're looking to stay in one place and simply relax. However, if you're someone who likes to get out and explore, the location and dated rooms might be a drawback.
Food: We were apprehensive about the food after reading some reviews online, but I found the food to be absolutely fantastic. I mostly stuck to Thai food, especially local cuisine, and I didn’t have a single dish that I disliked. Breakfast wasn’t off the charts amazing, but the food was certainly good and they had a lot of options.
Drinks: The “regular” cocktails were mediocre at all of the bars, but the signature cocktails at the main restaurant were quite delicious.
Room: We stayed in the ocean view villa and it was fantastic - well worth the money. The room was remarkably clean and came with many great amenities. We loved to sit on our deck chairs in the morning and look out over the ocean.
Pool: The pool was delightful for the most part during our stay. It was clean most of the time but had a little debris in it after some work had been done to clean up the palm trees (but they worked hard to get most of the debris out of the pool). It never felt crowded during our stay.
Location: The resort sits on a fairly isolated stretch of beach so we didn’t see many people who weren’t from our resort on the beach which was nice. There was a nice restaurant and some other small shops just a short walk down the road, and the resort offered a shuttle to the Bangniang market which was a lot of fun.
Breakfasts at hotels are often shoddy but at the Haven it was great. Attentive staff and even an egg station with a variety of options- I recommend the Thai Omelette.
Lots of activities on offer as well- we did a Thai cooking class in which they catered to our vegetarian diet.
Would 100% stay here again if I was ever in the surrounding area. Couldn’t recommend enough!
The staff were so welcoming and friendly from when we arrived to when we left and were always more than happy to help and have a friendly chat with you. The room was excellent, we had 2 minor issues with it but they were fixed within 30 minutes of reporting them to reception by the maintenance staff which I was very impressed by. It was my partners birthday while we were there and the staff knew about it so they sent a small cake and decorated the bed for her which was lovely. The room was cleaned daily to a high standard and the grounds of the hotel were also kept very tidy. The restaurant was good quality and reasonably priced.
Overall I can't really fault The Haven, we had an exceptional 2 weeks and would reccomend it to anyone who doesn't have young children as it is an adult only hotel.
