Grand Hôtel Moderne

Hmmmmmm …… mixed.
Firstly, the staff were excellent: polite, helpful, proactive. They made good suggestions and responded well to our requests for better room temperature.
One can also appreciate that the hotel was, once, modern and ‘grand’ but I would say that is no longer the case, mostly.
The entrance hall and restaurant, staircases are grand, reflecting on opulence and style from 100 years ago. A closer look however reveals some maintenance issues and a tiredness creeping in.
The bar area is beautifully decorated, but disappointingly small.

Dinner was good, but not special, and reasonable value for a hotel - better value, and quality, can be found locally.
Our room,( we had a superior double), was a reasonable size, clean but very ‘dull’ - very much ‘50 shades of brown’ with no ornament, touches of style or decoration. Furniture was functional and a bit tired. The bed was comfortable, dressed with ‘old fashioned’ sheets and blankets - obviously no duvets in the 19th century.
The room was very hot, no air conditioning, only heating. The room thermostat was the only item of decoration in the room - completely non functional. The staff were responsive/concerned - but could only turn the heating off completely, and suggest we open the window. Opening the window sort of worked - but let in all the noise from the street: bins being emptied, singing, shouting, etc.
The location (if you are in Lourdes for the basilica and ceremonies), was excellent - very convenient, just a 3-5 minute walk, (but that is also what brings some of the noise).

So - overall, good staff, nice ‘nostalgic’ decoration and style, but a bit old and tired. Room cleanliness was fine, but decor and maintenance needs attention. Not great value - but ‘reliable’.
