Hotel Centrál in Nagykanizsa

There are echoes of past grandeur in what was probably a beautiful hotel. Back in 1914 and no doubt the 1920's it was undoubtedly the place to be. The stained glass windows on the stairs, doors leading to the rooms which were built for 10 foot giants build up a sense of anticipation. But the room we stayed in was disappointing. No air-conditioning in a Hungarian city summer world be unbearable. The windows, which you will need to open during the night overlook a busy road in terms of noisy motorised and pedestrian traffic. There is no dedicated shower or even a shower curtain to prevent water spilling all over the floor. And the shower head is poorly fixed so the water can't easily be directed and too low so I had to crouch down beneath it. And no I'm not a 10 foot giant.

The breakfast was ok but the coffee was cold. The water and coffee heaters were unplugged so not surprising.

The staff were very helpful but they're aren't many. I'm guessing that they employ more during the peak seasons. It looked like the manager was looking after the breakfast buffet and talking to a contractor a floor above at the same time. He might also prepare the buffet as well. I wouldn't be surprised.

If you want a hotel in the center of Nagykanizsa then you haven't got a lot, if any, choice.
