Főnix Hotel in Balatonfoldvar

We planned a family vacation at the Phoenix Hotel, trusting the 4 stars of the hotel. Unfortunately, we had to be very disappointed because it falls far short of the expected standard. I don’t want to be unfair, so I’ll first describe what’s good, because there are so many:
- In the already beautiful Balatonföldvár, the location is excellent. Close to the beach and the harbor, within walking distance of everything that is interesting in the village.
- Cozy garden, beautiful old villa building.
- The staff is maximally kind and helpful, they do their best to make you feel good.
- You can enter the saunas directly from the garden pool, a very convenient solution.
And then come the black soup:
Upon arrival, they were told we had to pay for parking, and seeing my overcast face, they immediately added that it would cost the same as on the street. It wouldn’t be a problem if I didn’t pay a fortune for the accommodation it should fit into. If they were included in the price, they wouldn't even notice, so it's only good to have a bad taste when you arrive.
We rented 2 rooms, a 2-room apartment and a plain double bed. In the apartment only the living room is air conditioned, the bedroom is not. The blades of the device are broken, a large, bad-feeling black hole opens in the climate. The furniture is quite worn and uncomfortable. The mattress in our bed was so depreciated that we couldn’t sleep properly for a week. The bathroom is smaller than a panel apartment. The door of the cheap plastic shower enclosure is broken maybe, the door hangs on it. Suspicious stains on the wall, maybe paint. The cheapest toilet paper available, which can even be used for emery, is installed, and the roll started by the previous guest was also left there so as not to be wasted.
To the great delight of the kids, there was a huge TV in the room, but there was no frame to mount it to the wall with a console, they were rather crammed into the desk so I couldn’t even accidentally use my laptop comfortably. The wifi is such that the devices are constantly disconnected from it, you always have to log in again. The minibar is not refilled, its supply is poor. Used glasses were not replaced throughout the week.
The small garden pool would be very good, but the 4-star prices do not allow them to be heated, so in case of bad weather people are forced to look for a thermal bath in the area, which is not rich in Lake Balaton, at least they cannot meet the increased demand.
The biggest disappointment was caused by the meal. The restaurant is terribly bleak, in a bad mood, so even in the rain we tried to eat more in the garden. At the back is a room called for a wine bar, in which the wine shelves are completely empty, giving the impression of an unused warehouse. There’s also a Rex table out there that has been so badly fought that you can’t play properly on it. The food supply is very poor, you can choose from 3-4 types of main course in the evening, and for breakfast it is the same every day. The quality of the food is pathetic, the food is cooked from the cheapest ingredients and the food is devoid of any imagination. For example, in the case of a Cordon Bleu, the cheapest ham will be hidden under the cheese, and the cold cuts will be inedible for breakfast. The desserts are so bad that many times the kids didn’t even eat them. There is a larger selection at any of the beach buffets and they cook more deliciously in all the surrounding restaurants. Breakfast lasts from 8 to 10, but if we went down after 9, everything was exhausted. I didn’t leave myself, I asked the waiters to refill the food and be told for their benefit that they did it without a word. It's just inconvenient to have to ask a guest to do that.
It wouldn’t even bother me if I didn’t know the other 4 star hotels. For the same money, we had such lavish care in a few places that we were just amazed. If I could get this benefit in a cheap boarding house, I would still be happy, but after paying almost 700 thousand HUF, I feel that I have never been so deceived. This is my first time trying to vacation on the south shore, but it was my last time.
