Reviews
I rarely leave reviews this negative, but my experience at Grand Hotel Excelsior in Amalfi (Sept–Oct 2025) was so unacceptable that I feel obligated to warn other travelers.
On the very last day of my stay, I discovered a large amount of black mold inside the air vent of my room. I had been sick the entire trip, exhausted, congested, and dealing with sinus complications, and the mold made it clear why.
I emailed the hotel with photos, then followed up not once but three separate times. I was completely ignored, which is appalling. A serious health and safety hazard like this should have been met with immediate concern and action, but the hotel chose to stay silent.
The problems didn’t stop there:
- The entire bottom floor of the hotel reeked of mildew, a clear sign of long-term water damage and neglect.
- The property itself is falling apart: it is poorly maintained, and the building shows significant wear. It does not resemble the standard you would expect for the price or reputation.
- The shuttle service is flat-out unsafe. One of our drivers hit a parked car, recognized it, and kept driving without reporting it. On another day, the shuttle got into an accident serious enough that someone had to be taken to the hospital. Thankfully, I was not in the car at the time, but the lack of accountability was shocking.
- The bed was extremely uncomfortable and caused back pain.
- The pool, one of the main reasons I booked this resort, was filthy and covered in algae. It was completely unsanitary and unusable.
This hotel is not only poorly managed, but dangerous and dishonest. The mold, the accidents, the neglect, and the refusal to respond to guest concerns show a complete disregard for safety, cleanliness, and basic hospitality standards.
This resort significantly impacted our trip to Amalfi in the worst way. I was sick the entire time, which not only ruined the experience but forced us to miss pre-booked excursions. To make matters worse, I have still not received any response to my repeated emails. The hotel’s silence and lack of accountability are deeply concerning, and for that reason alone I would strongly recommend never staying here.
We could not sleep for 3 nights, at first thinking it was mosquitoes. Despite taking every possible precaution (long-sleeved pajamas and pants, covering myself with the bed cover, using Baygon spray and a plug-in mosquito repellent), I kept waking up in the middle of the night scratching. Every morning I had new bites, while the previous ones itched even worse throughout the day. The bites spread all over my body (arms, legs, neck, back, even under clothes). The itching was so intense that I scratched myself until I bled.
At the pharmacy, they confirmed my suspicion after seeing the typical aligned bites. Later, my husband and I actually found a live bug* inside the pillowcase (we have photos and video as proof).
At reception, one kind lady was understanding, but then a very rude man came, interrupting me in a disrespectful and arrogant tone, repeating “These are not bugs*. Did you see them? If you didn’t see them, then it’s not bugs*.” He wouldn’t let me explain, even after we showed him the evidence. His attitude was aggressive and completely unacceptable.
It’s a real shame, because the hotel is indeed beautiful, but what we will remember is this awful experience, the lack of respect, and the terrible way the situation was handled.
We recently stayed at the Grand Hotel Excelsior in Amalfi and overall, we had a truly enjoyable experience. The hotel is perched high above the Amalfi coast, offering stunning panoramic views that really elevate the stay. Waking up to that scenery each day was absolutely magical and one of the highlights of the trip.
Our room was spacious and had a lot of potential, but it was one of the non-renovated ones. While it was clean and comfortable, the furnishings and overall decor felt quite outdated—especially in contrast to other areas of the hotel that seem more modern and refreshed. A renovation of these older rooms would really help maintain a cohesive style and elevate the guest experience.
The staff were wonderful—always friendly, professional, and happy to help. The service overall was warm and attentive, from reception to the shuttle drivers.
The hotel offers a free shuttle service that runs throughout the day to both the town center and the hotel’s private beach. You can book your time slot in advance, and they’re quite punctual. A big plus is that the drivers are happy to drop you off mid-route if you’re heading somewhere else along the way. This added flexibility made getting around very convenient.
The hotel’s private beach is another great perk, especially during peak season when public beaches can get crowded. However, it’s important to note that the beach is not sandy—it’s made up of rough, stoney terrain. We highly recommend bringing swimming shoes to make the experience more comfortable, especially if you plan to go into the water. The shuttle takes you directly there and picks you up at your scheduled time.
Breakfast was decent and included a variety of basics—fresh fruit, pastries, eggs, cereals, and juices. It wasn’t particularly memorable, but it covered all the essentials. As for the hotel restaurant, while the food was okay, the menu felt quite limited. We felt that a bit more variety and some local, seasonal options would really enhance the dining experience and better reflect the rich culinary culture of the region.
To sum it up: the location is unbeatable, the views are breathtaking, and the staff really go above and beyond. With some updates to the older rooms and a bit more creativity and variety in the restaurant menu, this hotel has the potential to be one of the standout stays in Amalfi. We’d still recommend it—especially if you value views and a peaceful escape—just with a few practical expectations in mind.
Pros:
1. They give you a free shuttle service that you can book in advance to and from Amalfi city centre. You can book it from your own phone when you are out on some trip and anytime with ease.
2. People at the reception are very nice and helpful. They even upgraded my room for no extra charges.
3. The restaurant serves amazing food.
4. Views from the hotel, cleanliness and the overall ambience deserves Five star!
Cons:
1. Location is bit far from city centre and if you are travelling in peak season even with the free shuttle, delays might irritate you.
2. Breakfast buffet has less options especially for vegetarians. I expected atleast some warm food options like a toasted bread or crepes.
Recommend to book it 100%.
The hotel itself is absolutely stunning, and its location is perfection. Being situated high up above the city center offers a unique perspective that you don’t get if you were to stay downtown. We loved watching the boats and taking in the gorgeous sunrises and sunsets everyday. The complimentary shuttle service makes it so that you can get downtown quickly and easily, and drops you off right in the middle of everything, making it easy to walk around downtown, catch a ferry or bus, etc.
The hotel is also extremely accommodating in booking private transfers, excursions, etc. The staff were incredibly kind and knowledgeable. The building and rooms were clean and gorgeous. We simply cannot speak highly enough about this place, it was absolutely perfect and we will remember our stay forever!
Service and approach from waiters at the bar/restaurant was extremely poor during our whole stay so obviously something was wrong at that area of the hotel.
