Reviews
The room was dusty. I was close to the elevator and that thing was incredibly loud, but not as loud as the a/c, had to cut it off to sleep. The street noise was strangely loud too, despite the small window and high floor. I didn't mind the tiny window (the photo posted is the view from there), as I kept it closed most of the time. My room faced the east, so it was blindingly bright in the morning.
I'll have to agree the location isn't great, it is in California after all....but for me it was good enough. Walked there to and from the Amtrak station. Very good spot for hopping right on to public transit to get you anywhere
The room has a fridge and Keurig, but I had to set the Keurig on the floor to use it, as there were no surfaces near outlets to place it, and wash the mugs (which I would do regardless) that looked like they had melted crayons in them. Knowing how overworked housekeeping can be, I just feel disappointed it seems nothing can be done to improve the cleanliness of hotels. I've had to add another piece of luggage just to bring my own cleaning supplies, but that is not unique to this location.
The internet worked well, the tv worked well too, though I don't watch it. The room actually has great lighting. Maybe not a place to stay if you are looking for amenities, but I really only visited Sac to ride the trains and eat ice cream since the Hagen Dazs and Dairy Queen in Fresno have closed 😭
I'll start with the good:
The view of the capitol building from the room/balcony was exquisite.
The staff were extremely helpful on check-in, even requesting the penthouse elevator and holding it for us.
The decor/theme is very unique and charming, focusing exclusively on historical political events that occurred around the capital of California.
Now for the not so good:
Upon booking the room, I asked if they could do anything special for us on our wedding night other than alcohol (since we don't drink), and the receptionist assured us they could. Upon checking in, they offered us a bottle of champagne that was sitting behind the front desk, but upon getting to the room, there was nothing special at all. No chocolates, no snacks, no strawberries, no petals on the bed, not even a card or a note. All that was there was the 2 standard bottles of water we get as part of our Bonvoy status. We did not feel appreciated or cared for at all.
The balcony is *shared* with the room next to us. Can you imagine our surprise when my wife and I open the door to the balcony and see other people out there? The balcony is easily big enough to put a divider and some plants down the center to give both rooms private balconies and still have unrestricted views of the capitol! It makes no sense!
We were told by the front desk that room service was available until 11, but calling at 10:15, the phone kept ringing and ringing, eventually going to a voicemail that said the number was out of service. I called the front desk and had them transfer me, only to have the same issue.
Now for the bad:
The room was right next to the elevator equipment and it was incredibly loud... it sounded like a vibrating phone was laying on the table, going off all night long, making it impossible to sleep. We left at 3am to find a different spot to stay and finally came back the next day to remove everything from the room and check out early. This has to be one of the worst experiences at a hotel we have ever had and will likely never be going back.
To echo what some have already said, there is no free parking in the area but they do have valet service. It's also worth noting that the Cesar Chavez park across the street is very lively and is sometimes host to live music events, fairs and festivals which can create some noise; this park is also home to many of the city's homeless though they tend to keep to themselves.
Overall, the hotel decor/theme and location are reasons I recommend the Citizen to friends, family and anyone planning a stay here in the Sacramento.
The staff was fantastic, and the restaurant next door was great! We enjoyed cocktails there and were super pleased with the quality and uniqueness of the drinks.
This is a great place to be downtown. There's plenty within walking distance, and I would definitely stay here again.
