I’m not really into politics, but I like this hotel and the idea of it. The rooms are really cozy and I mean real cozy. Some may complain the rooms are too small and they might be if you have two people or more in one room. I was by myself and it was fine for me. The valet workers were cool and they worked hard but the whole valet situation is pretty unorganized and chaotic. Hands-down the worst set up for a valet service I’ve seen. The walls are also ridiculously thin. You can hear your next-door neighbor at a regular talking volume as well as people outside on the street. Could also hear the domestic dispute between a couple that was extremely disturbing to where I had to contact the front desk to do a wellness check a couple of times and luckily everything was sorted out. (He got the boot). I appreciate the hotel reimbursing me on certain charges in lieu of the disturbances but unfortunately, I have to stay with this low rating. If the disturbance didn’t happen and the walls were a little bit thicker, I’d give it a solid 3.5.

It's just a hotel tbh. Nothing spectacular and nothing really negative. The fourth star goes to the staff, they were either really friendly or at least good at pretending.

The room was dusty. I was close to the elevator and that thing was incredibly loud, but not as loud as the a/c, had to cut it off to sleep. The street noise was strangely loud too, despite the small window and high floor. I didn't mind the tiny window (the photo posted is the view from there), as I kept it closed most of the time. My room faced the east, so it was blindingly bright in the morning.

I'll have to agree the location isn't great, it is in California after all....but for me it was good enough. Walked there to and from the Amtrak station. Very good spot for hopping right on to public transit to get you anywhere

The room has a fridge and Keurig, but I had to set the Keurig on the floor to use it, as there were no surfaces near outlets to place it, and wash the mugs (which I would do regardless) that looked like they had melted crayons in them. Knowing how overworked housekeeping can be, I just feel disappointed it seems nothing can be done to improve the cleanliness of hotels. I've had to add another piece of luggage just to bring my own cleaning supplies, but that is not unique to this location.

The internet worked well, the tv worked well too, though I don't watch it. The room actually has great lighting. Maybe not a place to stay if you are looking for amenities, but I really only visited Sac to ride the trains and eat ice cream since the Hagen Dazs and Dairy Queen in Fresno have closed 😭

My wife and I reserved the penthouse suite w/balcony for 2 nights during our 3-day wedding before we were planning to head out for our honeymoon.

I'll start with the good:
The view of the capitol building from the room/balcony was exquisite.
The staff were extremely helpful on check-in, even requesting the penthouse elevator and holding it for us.
The decor/theme is very unique and charming, focusing exclusively on historical political events that occurred around the capital of California.

Now for the not so good:
Upon booking the room, I asked if they could do anything special for us on our wedding night other than alcohol (since we don't drink), and the receptionist assured us they could. Upon checking in, they offered us a bottle of champagne that was sitting behind the front desk, but upon getting to the room, there was nothing special at all. No chocolates, no snacks, no strawberries, no petals on the bed, not even a card or a note. All that was there was the 2 standard bottles of water we get as part of our Bonvoy status. We did not feel appreciated or cared for at all.
The balcony is *shared* with the room next to us. Can you imagine our surprise when my wife and I open the door to the balcony and see other people out there? The balcony is easily big enough to put a divider and some plants down the center to give both rooms private balconies and still have unrestricted views of the capitol! It makes no sense!
We were told by the front desk that room service was available until 11, but calling at 10:15, the phone kept ringing and ringing, eventually going to a voicemail that said the number was out of service. I called the front desk and had them transfer me, only to have the same issue.

Now for the bad:
The room was right next to the elevator equipment and it was incredibly loud... it sounded like a vibrating phone was laying on the table, going off all night long, making it impossible to sleep. We left at 3am to find a different spot to stay and finally came back the next day to remove everything from the room and check out early. This has to be one of the worst experiences at a hotel we have ever had and will likely never be going back.

I've stayed here at the Citizen many times over the past several years. Before I moved to Sacramento, I would visit for weekend trips with friends or my significant other and almost always stayed here. There's something really fun and interesting about the historical and political theme of the hotel that I'm drawn to. The service I've received has always been stellar and accommodating. The rooms themselves are charming and tastefully decorated. As far as location, staying here puts you right in the center of a lot of awesome restaurants and attractions within walking distance.

To echo what some have already said, there is no free parking in the area but they do have valet service. It's also worth noting that the Cesar Chavez park across the street is very lively and is sometimes host to live music events, fairs and festivals which can create some noise; this park is also home to many of the city's homeless though they tend to keep to themselves.

Overall, the hotel decor/theme and location are reasons I recommend the Citizen to friends, family and anyone planning a stay here in the Sacramento.

Very nice hotel. The room was small, but that is to be expected in a building that was built in the early 1900s. The room was well furnished, had a comfortable bed, nice toiletries, and we had a great view of the park. The staff that worked at the reception desk as well as at the valet were very polite and welcoming. The parking was a little hard at first because we were looking for a parking lot, not realizing that it was valet only. After calling the hotel and figuring out that we needed to pull right up to the front door, it was smooth after that. We would definitely stay at the Citizen Hotel again if we are in Sacramento on another occasion.

Rooms are nicely appointed, albeit slightly smaller than you might expect. The attached restaurant (The Grange) is very nice. Street noise is higher than you'd expect. I would recommend trying to stay in a north or west facing room otherwise you might get more than your fill of late-night bar traffic.

Very central. Park opposite had an amazing Mexican restaurant. Good value

This is a stunning hotel! The decor and atmosphere is fantastic and super unique - the attention to detail with period-relevant decorations and accents is extremely thoughtful and makes for a fun experience.

The staff was fantastic, and the restaurant next door was great! We enjoyed cocktails there and were super pleased with the quality and uniqueness of the drinks.

This is a great place to be downtown. There's plenty within walking distance, and I would definitely stay here again.

Had an excellent stay. The place is super cool and has an old school classy appearance. Rooms were nice and everyone that worked there was also. Definitely would return. Grange has legit food and some great house cocktails. Very good bartenders there also.

Staff were great and helped me out leading up to the California marathon, including taking my pre-prepared food to their staff room to heat up. Lobby was nice and done up for Christmas. The hotel is walking distance to most of downtown and Old Sacramento, but there were some strange characters in the area. Rooms were clean, quiet and modern. Perhaps a little on the small side and my room only had small windows. If you like light, I’d make sure to focus on finding a room with larger windows.
