UNAHOTELS MH Matera

I was going to give this hotel a 4 star rating. Then I went to the pool. I was just lounging poolside and a young lady came up to me and said I would have to leave or pay 25 Euros for using the pool area for 1.5 hours. Ridiculous! BTW our double room was small and only had a queen bed not a king bed which is so common nowadays.

Beautiful hotel. However, the front desk staff is rude. The spa staff is rude. The restaurant staff is rude. Not helpful, not welcoming. Well, to those who spoke fluent Italian yes to us who spoke very little but tried rude. One of the guests was told she couldn't use the pool because the sun was out. No lie. It's not a nice place at all.

We will put the things we liked at the top, as it's only respectful to show we did enjoy a little bit of our time here.

Small selection for breakfast, no issues there a light breakfast is just fine with us. While no mini bars are in the room, the vending machines make a very strong black coffee. ( Better than what is downstairs.)

The rooms were clean and the beds were nice. The air conditioner had issues on our second night. It wouldn't stay on, we propped the door open to the terrace to keep a breeze going.

Now onto the main issues and why we only have 1 star:

Something kept slamming near us. All throughout the night at random times the bang could be heard. Music could also be heard and loud chatter of other guests.

Did we mention a wedding was going on? We weren't told a wedding was going on by the front desk! One would think that telling other guest that a wedding is going on and where it would be on the grounds; it would allow everyone to be polite and not walk through the ceremony area. "Only the pool is closed" or no answer at all in the middle of the day was all we were told.

The front desk was very rude overall; very snippy and posh. They acted as if you were bothering them when you needed to check in/out or ask them something. Even with semi-fluent Italian, very stand offish if you are not fully fluent and from the area.

We had dinner as a group as well, and guests that were outside of our group that needed a menu. We asked, we asked in italian, our guide asked, and yet no additional menu was provided. We had to take a picture of what was offered up front to even get an order in. The food and wine were all okay, nothing to rave and praise over - but the braised beef was very good-.

At breakfast, one morning an additional group/ leftover wedding guest were in the area. It seems that there was even less food out- even for getting there when breakfast opened-. There are two coffee machines, that work quiet well for powdered items. While sitting in the overflow room, we noted that the staff brought a couple were espresso by the staff from behind the bar, however, we were not offered and nor was anyone else in the English speaking groups.

Overall Review: Rooms are comfortable to get rest, the food is okay depending on the dish, and the staff could stand to smile more.
