Reviews
1. Triple confirm that Railay will pick you up at Krabi airport. This will cost you 2000 baht. Leaving to go back to the airport will cost you another 1600 baht.
When we arrived after 7 pm expecting to be picked up, there was no one from the hotel. After calling them we were told we were on our own, they claim to never receive our request for pickup. Even on confirmation email it says our flight time and number also how many passengers. My wife speaks Thai, good luck if you do not. Total cost to get to the hotel was a little over 3000 baht including van, boat ride and 500 baht to carry our bags to the boat. We had to wade about 150 yards down the beach at night into the ocean to get to the boat.
2. Bring extra bug spray.
Hotel includes some in your room. But we like our all natural one mineral oil base which works ok. Don't go out of your room without it.
3. Bring water shoes.
The beach, while it looks nice is terrible if you actually want to go I the water. Full of dead coral rocks which you will be stepping on in order to get to waist deep water. You won't be able to see in the water as it is full of sand and silt from all the boats. The only area that is nice and sandy is the area that the boats come and go in.
4. Stick with room service
Local restaurants were hit and miss. With poor slow service and higher than normal prices.
5. A/C systems is OK. But burning of trees and brush in April/May cause the smell to come in the room.
6. Maid service
If you want the maid to actually change your sheets you will need to rip them off the bed and pile on the floor. Otherwise she will just make your bed. Even after leaving a tip and note in Thai she didn't change them. They will get sandy no mater how careful you are.
My final advice would be to skip Railay Beach area and stay in Phuket on Karon beach. Nice and quiet, much better service. You can still take speedboats to all the islands like koh phi phi. Much better restaurant choices and shops.
When we came to the hotel we got to our room, which is a regular pool view room, and there was a terrible refurbishment noise coming from the spa. We came to the reception, and their answer was that if we wanted a quiet room we should have booked the jacuzzi room. What a rude! We had to demand a solution for the problem, and was answered that the work had stopped and was promised quiet for the rest of our stay.
Happily we got back to the room just to realize that the refurbishment work is still on. We had to walk back to the reception (a relative long walk), which during that walk we was told by the Bell boy that the work is on every day until 17:00, and that we are the only guests it was annoying to.
At the reception they offered us an upgrade to the jacuzzi room for one night, and then to return our original room the day after, with a promise that the work is done for the rest of our stay. That solution was not good enough for us. We didn't want a temporarily upgrade, just a quiet room where we can stay for the rest of the reservation time.
The receptionist rolled her eyes on us, and told us there was no manager to talk to. After we insisted, the manager arrived and offered us no different solution, but her promise that the noise was over until the end of our stay. We accepted that promise, and the stay was indeed quiet, but the attitude of the hotel staff - from the rude bell boy, through the rolling eyes receptionist and to the manager who kept hashing us and not letting us completing a sentence - is a disgrace!
I should mention that the staff's rude and unwelcoming attitude kept through the rest of the stay, but this time we weren't surprised and we didn't let it get into us.
All in all, the place is very beautiful and in a great location, and despite the poor breakfast the stay can be very pleasant - as long as you can contain the staff's awful attitude. The only reason this place got 3 stars and not one is our ability to overcome the bad experience and to make the best of our time at the beach.
The bottom line is - will I return to this hotel? Probably not.
By the way, please make sure to check out by 11am. Although the check out time in the rest of Thailand is 12pm, for some reason this hotel thinks you should be a psychic, and they don't state during check in that the check out time is 11am. More of the same disgraceful service.
