Reviews
We (two fine gentlemen on a mission) just came back from a glorious 4-day all-inclusive drinkfest at the legendary Hotel Amaraigua in Malgrat de Mar — and let me tell you: this place is an absolute paradise for thirsty adults with a sense of humor and zero parenting responsibilities.
First things first: THE BEER. Self-serve. Cold. Flowing like the fountains of Valhalla. You walk up, pull the tap, and become your own bartender. Same goes for the cocktails: grab a glass, go behind the bar, and start mixing like Tom Cruise in Cocktail. And no, we’re not talking about cheap jet fuel — the spirits here are quality stuff. Gin, vodka, rum — all actually drinkable without wincing.
The buffet? Tasty. Big variety. Only minor complaint: sometimes the food was a bit cold. But come on — we were mostly just looking for a solid base before the next piña colada. For the price we paid, it was more than fair. Honestly, the price-performance ratio is just outrageously good.
The hotel comes packed with free toys for big kids: ping pong bats, badminton rackets, boules, board games — basically an entire toy chest for drunk adults. Don’t believe me? Check the photos, they’re not lying.
Now let’s talk staff: these legends are available 24/7. One of them literally helped us find our room door at 3:30 AM after we got lost in a hallway that looked like a set from Inception. Give that man a medal.
The rooms? Surprisingly modern, super clean, each with its own balcony. Pro tip: ask for a room at the far end of the hallway, because right at the beginning of the corridor there’s a faint, shall we say... aromatic reminder of a medieval sewer. But hey, you’re not sleeping in the hallway, so who cares?
Outside the hotel, you’ve got a train stop basically on your doorstep, so hopping on a direct train to Barcelona is as easy as ordering another mojito. The area itself is full of bars, pubs, and the classic touristy shops selling flamingo pool floats and fake Ray-Bans. It’s got everything your slightly hungover soul might need.
Every night there's some kind of entertainment in the courtyard: music, shows, dancing — just enough to get you back in the mood for round 6 of the evening. The crowd is deliciously international: Brits, Scandinavians, and everyone in between. Age range? From fresh-faced partygoers to silver-haired legends still throwing back tequila like it’s 1995. It’s mostly couples and drinking buddies, though — not really the place for kids unless you're raising future bartenders.
Bottom line:
If you’re looking for a budget-friendly adult getaway directly on the beach with unlimited booze, good food, lots of laughs, and a healthy dose of chaos, Hotel Amaraigua is your place. We came. We saw. We drank everything.
10/10, would stumble back again.
🍺🍸🎯💃🌴
We arrived late at night and were greeted by an older gentleman. He didn’t say anything, only looked at our passports then asked for 18 euros. Didn’t explain what for until we asked, he just held out his hand. We didn’t get our 2 euros change back because “no change”, that’s all he replied.
When we asked the reception to check out our TV as it was not working we got an eye roll from another gentleman and realised we won’t be getting any help here.
The two ladies at reception however were lovely and approachable.
Rooms.
Our room as soon as we walked in shocked me. Extremely smelly! Smell of mildew, dampness and sewage. Everything in the room felt damp , the bedding was extremely uncomfortable. There was hair from previous occupiers on the bedding. Air conditioning luckily was fully functioning which helped the smell a little. Mould was on the walls in the passage way and in the bathroom. Ceiling boards also had damage, spider webs and looked very unkept. The rooms definitely do not look like the images shown on the websites.
The housekeeping however did a great job.
Regarding images online , they need to be updated as they don’t truly reflect on what the hotel currently looks like. It is an old quite unseemly building, crumbling walls. In ladies bathroom at reception there is even a hole in the ceiling leading outside.
The pool area also not has only one larger pool, the other smaller is gone and used for extra bed space.
You will receive drinks only in plastic cups, won’t be able to take any pretty looking photos with your cocktails.
Food was okay. Underwhelming for sure, we spent last two days eating out. The dessert selection was nice, a lot of options and fresh fruits.
The hotel NEEDS TO check and fix labels on their food. I speak multiple languages and didn’t always understand what meat is being served as the image was for turkey but the Russian underneath said “pork”?
You definitely have a lot of options for food, a lot of fresh salad too however from all the places I’ve ever stayed it was my least favourite for sure.
From good points:
The access to the beach is great. All you have to do is walk out of the back gate from the pool area and you are there. Bar staff were very fun to interact with, they were indeed lovely. Cocktails were nice. Alcohol access for those who are interested is good , many options. Ladies at reception also are lovely if you require help or any attendance.
The entertainment is good, always something to do. Train station is super close as well as access to shops. If you want to travel to Girona or Barcelona it is super easy to do. However the train tracks are right outside the hotel so you will hear it and feel it.
This trip was our honeymoon. Did the hotel reach my expectations? No. If the room was better and well as service from some staff my ratings would have been hugely different.
Is it a 4 star hotel? Absolutely Not.
Do I recommend it? No. Would I stay again? Absolutely not.
Luckily Spain itself with beautiful scenery culture and lovely people have saved this trip for us.
