Good choice of hotel due to its proximity to the main station. The room was basic, but neat and tidy. Service was overall good as well.
Of note, I particularly liked the breakfast for its fruit selection and the option of warm dishes like scrambled eggs and sausages.
I wish the hotel had offered a bit more on the service side though, for example only basic soap shampoo was available and even upon request, there was no conditioner.

I booked a room a month in advance, everything was fine. But then just the week before my arrival they just cancelled booking. They didn't even explain reasons. I had to urgently find a new place to stay with much more higher prices.

We booked two rooms to stay in for the night of the Taylor Swift concert. When we arrived at check in time (15:00) we were told that neither of our rooms were ready.
The Front Office Manager was incredibly rude and neither apologised or offered compensation for this inconvenience until we explicitly asked for it. In fact she told us to go elsewhere if we didn’t like that the rooms weren’t ready. She also refused to tell us when we might expect that our rooms would be available for us to use, finally saying it could be anywhere from 20 minutes to 3 hours. She was generally incredibly unhelpful and rude.
One of our rooms became available at 16:00- an hour late. However, when we got into the room there were no pillow cases on the beds. At 17:00, so two hours after the stated check in time, we had to leave for the concert and the other room was still not ready.
Other parties who arrived after us were given their rooms immediately at 15:00.
At this point I would also like to mention that my party was comprised of solely non-Germans. The first interaction with the Front Office Manager was her asking my (fluent German speaking) friend if any of us had a German ID. When my friend answered yes and went to produce the ID, the Front Office Manager said “good” but then did not want to see the ID. We all considered this a weird question. Additionally, when myself or my friend asked a question in English, the Front Office Manager would only reply to my German -speaking friend and only in German. This added to the general feeling of hostility. I understand that German people prefer to speak German in their own county, however I think it is reasonable to expect that visiting tourists do not speak the local language and that, if you do not like foreign people, a job at a hotel reception is perhaps not a wise career choice.

Friendly staff and clean rooms, breakfast was astounding, and the receptionist at check-in was really professional and considerate. Hotel is close to a small city center, which is very lively and bustling. I will recommend this hotel to couples with children.

In general, we had a nice stay. Only unpleasant moment was breakfast time. Compare to the number of room, breakfast saloon is very small. Long queue for a coffee (front of ONLY ONE coffee machine). There is not enough place to sit and get breakfast. It might be as a reason of peak season (Christmas time). However, it was still unpleasant moment.

Room was fine. Cleanish. Bit dated. Bathroom modern and clean. There didn't ever seem to be any staff at Reception whilst we stayed here.

We stayed here several times now, always during the Spiel Messe. The location is great, near the main train station and thus also the underground line to the Messe. And one of the advantages of Intercity hotels is that you get a card which allows you to use the local public transport for free during your stay. The room was very quiet but also very small and that was the business room, I wonder what the normal rooms look like. Breakfast always quite good, on our last stay some of the things in the buffet weren't replenished after 9:00 anymore, though. In former years they were friendly enough to open some of their conference rooms for guests who came there for the Spiel Messe so that they could try out their new games in the evening. This always was a very, very good service. This year (2021) they did not open these rooms, but since far fewer people visited the Spiel and also considering the much higher effort to clean the rooms during the pandemic, all this is understandable. However, hope is that in the following years more people are coming for the Spiel again and the super friendly staff at the Intercity hotel continue the service with opening the conference rooms again.

Great central Essen hotel. Very clean and modern bedrooms. Decent continental breakfast and very friendly reception staff. Would recommend.
