Moxy City Hotel, Essen1 / 46

Essen, Gildehofstrasse 10 🧭 Map
Mediocre hotel. + Friendly staff + clean rooms + location -/- small and warm rooms -/- inadequate airconditioning (we switched rooms, but stays the same) -/- breakfast until 10am, even in the weekend -/- so so breakfast (strange given the positive reviews of the breakfast) -/- typical small hotel gym -/- bad coffee
Awesome location, like 5mins walk from train station and into the shops Helpful staff and amazing breakfast Must check out the Rosemarie Cafe, cakes are so yummy and great service
Basically all you need, good priced room and decent bed. BUT the downstairs cafe sells things priced a bit too high. €5,50 for a single water is a bit much. Luckily the Hauptbanhoff is close enough to walk to Lidl or Aldi, great location. Only real complaint is the window barely opens. You want fresh air, but you can't really get it. Good internet and otherwise nice place to stay in Essen.
We were very happy that the room was ready at our arrival one hour before official check in time. The room was big enough, the bed was comfortable and I really liked the small sitting area next to the bed. The room was refreshed during our two night stay. There is also an ironing room available for the guests. We had a fun evening playing ping pong at the bar.
Rooms were small and we missed a few things. The hotel is more fun when youre at the ground floor with somebody else where you can play games like table tennis and table football. The location is exactly in the center with a big shopping street being 2 minutes away. The people at the bar are also very nice. There aren't any different types of rooms.
Hotel is what you can expect from a Moxy but the staff is extremely friendly I had ordered food one day and didn’t get a notification it was delivered. As I was walking to the lobby I met a man who works there called Artion, who was bringing my food to the room. It was completely unnecessary but very sweet!

Conveniently located a few minutes from the U-Bahn, looks over a pretty square, and the rooms are spacious, clean, and modern. Staff was very friendly and spoke English quite well. The continental breakfast isn't what you'd be used to in the USA, but it was still good. The only inconvenience was they provided only one room card instead of two. Not sure if this is normal, but all Holiday Inns I've stayed...
Excellent and friendly staff. The rooms and beds were nice, but the bathrooms need renovation, and the sound insulation between rooms and hallways was not so good. The room keys wouldn't stay programmed for more than 15 minutes, so I had to visit the lobby nearly every time I went back to my room.
Friendly staff. Rooms are fine for the express brand. We slept 3 easily with the sofa bed. Breakfast is typically German (no complaints), but if you're expecting scrambled eggs and such then you'll be disappointed. Parking, if you have to use the attached parking garage. However, parking in the street is mostly free if you can find a space.

Clean and convenient with a cafe in the supermarket right beside the hotel
The location was excellent, and the room was clean and tidy. I particularly liked the self-check-in—easy and quick. My only minor criticism was that the sink drained a bit slowly. Overall, though, everything was very good, and I can recommend the hotel.
I like the location of the hotel, the cleanliness and simple. I’ll always stay here whenever I come to Germany.
View from my room. Near to Aldy and tram. No kettle provided in the room . No tea , no mug , nothing . Difficult to register as you need translater to fill up the form . Not working lift, so I need to carry my heavy bag up to level 2. I take a break a while but was scolded not to stay there.
is the best place for solo travler and olso cheep for me
a 8 minute tram ride from essen center hbf. Then a minute walk to the hotel. Check in is lengthy, took like 5 minutes but the room/building is very clean and comfortable. Supermarket is right next to it so getting drinks and food is convenient.

Small, but comfortable rooms. Perfect for one person. Friendly staff. Recommend!
Nice hotel with excelent breakfast
I stayed here for 3 nights. The service and friendliness of staff is the best I have experienced anywhere in Europe or the US. Whatever I asked for it was done - from reception. The breakfast staff were exceptional. I wouldn’t stay anywhere else. Thank you for being so welcoming and helpful.
Old fashioned hotel, definitely would not rate 4* Breakfast was ok, nothing extraordinary. Good location with shuttle bus
Super friendly staff, extremely old fashioned place - even for a best western.
The rooms are clean and comfortable, but they are small. The bathrooms are also clean and tidy, but also small. Nevertheless the hotel is nice, breakfast is very good and the restaurant has good food. It is not a brand new hotel, but worth the price.

Worked out very good short walk to town for dinner & train station ,great breakfast allclean & tidy
Good service, nice and clean hotel. Expensive parking, which isn't included. Trains passing by isn't a + except if you are traveling by one of them. 😉
Staff was courteous and friendly, rooms were clean. Breakfast area clean and food was nice. Location, though... haha. Well, let's just say I woke up quite a few times from the train noises.
Room are decent and people are nice, but €18 for breakfast that have little choice of €7 for a bottle of water is a bit much. Also right now (2024) it’s construction right outside, so if you need want to nap during the afternoon, it’s a bit annoying.
Stayed here for one night for a concert. It was clean, quiet, had good AC and is a short walk to the main Essen train station, so ticked all of the boxes. I have removed one star because we asked the hotel to arrange two taxis for my friend and I who were heading to separate airports. In both cases, the price estimate given by the hotel was significantly lower (by about 40%) than what the taxis ultimately...
The room is nice and clean, The air conditioning and heating system is excellent, the bed is wide and not high, there is no water kettle for tea, check out of the hotel at 11! They did not alert us to that, and they open the door of the room on you while you are in it! If you enter the breakfast buffet a little before closing, the staff will wait for you to finish your food while looking into your...

Good value and convenient location Near to the station, so easy access to a lot of nearby cities. Modern room and clean shower room. Breakfast was worth the additional fee and the staff were very welcoming.
Good location. Clean. Comfy beds. Quite modern. Good wifi. Amazing for one night, real close to Essen station across the highway.
Good hotel not far from station Clean and efficient, a 5 minute walk from main station and 10 minutes from main shopping area/city centre. A standard business hotel with friendly staff and good value for money.
Really friendly, helpful staff, comfortable and sizeable room. Breakfast buffet was excellent for an additional, reasonable, fee. Close to train station and the opera house, was very happy to stay here.
Comfortable rooms with good quality service a at Essen central train station
Good location and comfortable bed. The TV doesn't work properly unfortunately.

It was ok-ish very tiny room 😬
Unfortunately smoking only outside. Beside this ok.
Good location in Gelsenkirschen near station and shops, no upper restaurants but Essen is nearby, parking charges, 8E per day, hotel small and busy but good for short stays. Nice staff and breakfast.
Hotel for short-term stays suitable, something in the years come, the Breakfast is good but train ticket incl overpriced,. All in all, okay!
Cheap Hotel, slept for a night after a concert there. The room was OK, Breakfast we found a bit expensive. But there are good Alternatives in the city. Beautiful, the proximity to the train station and the free Ticket is.
From the Service, it was very satisfied , Breakfast was also great .... Had booked a Family Room, what we have a regular room where a fold-out bed inside was made ! To sleep it was very noisy since we slept on the street ...? Rooms are very small , a few cosmetic repairs would have to be made ! Apart from the room . It was all okay . Everything was Good, just the room didn't have a refrigerator.
Average quality hotel for the price/location. No restaurant, but a decent breakfast buffet available in the mornings. Staff were somewhat abrupt at times but could well just need a cultural things...
They have a 24/7 reception, what is very nice. Breakfast is good, could be upgraded with eggs or something hot, but is okay. Room was clean, but small. Especially the bathroom. An unencrypted WiFi is a no-go for me. But I wasn't able to use it that long anyway, cause it was first super slow and broken on my second day at the hotel.
This is a family run hotel in a suburb of Essen, within easy walking distance of museums, art galleries, shops and restaurants. Friendly staff, comfortable beds and good German breakfast. Apart from the refurbished bathrooms, the hotel has a 1980s feel to it, solid and reassuring. The only downside is finding somewhere to park on street. I would definitely use it again.
Clean rooms and good breakfast. The hotel is in a quiet district near the city centre (~5 minutes). The only problem is that only a small part of the staff speaks English.

I booked a room by emailing the hotel directly. At the time of booking, they had advertised a special offer for walking/hiking in the Ruhr valley including care parcel and hiking/walking information, with prices starting from Euros 38.50 per person. The hotel manager offered a room for 94 Euros, 12 Euros more than the rate on their direct booking system on the website for a room. As the email did...
Nice hotel This is a nice hotel at reasonable prices, situated in the citycentre. Certainly not a luxury hotel but good value for money. Very nice and attentative in the reception. I got a fairly big room with a balcony . also nice. I didn´t use the breakfast so cannot comment on that. Internet was stable and fairly fast. I can recommend this hotel to those not expecting a luxury stay.
Essen business stay Room was quiet. Shower good and hot. Hotel manager was great. Not far from Central Train Station. Only issue is there are no bars close and not many restaurants within a 10 minute walk but if you walked 10-15 minutes there were a fair few options
Located from 5-10 mins. walk from Essen Hbf. Very quiet and staff is helpful. Free one glass of beer or coke is available at the time of check-in. If you want to go shopping, go walk for 10 mins. and then you'll reach Limbecker Platz. There's REWE (supermarket) and you can grab some German sweets for gifts. :)
A good place located in the city centre. Very good spot to crash in for a short stay in Essen.
Great place to stay close to the station and restaurant area
The host was exceptional. We really appreciated the ability to use the breakfast tables for playing board games at night.

The hotel's environment and location are both good, though the rooms are a bit small. The breakfast is also quite good, making it worth a subsequent stay. If you need help, you can contact the front desk staff, who speak English and provide decent service.
Modern hotel, good standard but rooms not too big. Very nice bathroom modern. Breakfast good although orange juice awful. Generally I recommend
The hotel facilities are new, clean and sanitary. The breakfast is not rich, but it is okay.
Clean and modern hotel in the "niu"-Style. Decent-size room with very comfortable bed. Not much facilities (no fridge in room, no water provided...), and no gym facilities - but that is fine with the very reasonable price point. Some limited dining options at the reception bar in the evening (pizza or Flammkuchen). Overall all was fine and would book again.
Unfortunately, the breakfast buffet was completely overbooked, so everything was always empty and the selection was limited. The rooms were excellent.
Friendly staff, nice interior and clean rooms.

The hotel was quiet, clean and comfortable. The breakfast service was good. This was my first stay and I would book this hotel for my next visit.
Over all good Over all good, the reception is friendly, the place is clean and offers what you expect. The bed might be a bit to hard for me, but that is a personal thing. The wifi needs an Update, 2024 and just scraping by on two bars is not acceptable. Breakfeast was good, but at 20€ pr day it is in the heavy end. Did not eat dinner at the hotel.
A great night’s sleep! Clean, very comfortable and quiet. Would stay here again.
Just a one-nighter. No complaints. Clean, quiet room. Crew was kind and helpful with checking in.

Friendly checkin staff, clean and comfortable room. The balcony was quite nice. The bed was comfy with a bunch of pillows. Despite being in the centre of town, it was really quiet at night and I had a great night's sleep. Very good value for money.
Room was clean and tidy. Even though there was construction around there was not a noise issue when I was there. Breakfast was typical Continental Style with cold cuts yogurt cereal but there was no hot options such as eggs or sausages. Nothing special but adequate. Overall, I would definitely stay here again
Great stay! Good location close to Hbf train station and plenty of restaurants. Very comfortable and spacious room. Staff was kind and accommodating. Lounge bar was a huge plus!
Lovely hotel and perfect location. The nicest and most comfortable bed and bedding we have had in the last four weeks in Germany for Euro24. Would happily book again.
Good stay Great hotel, reasonable value considering the euros was on, good location only 10 mins walk from the station. The bar, lobby areas amd rooms are stylish and clean and the building is cool. However the breakfast is overpriced at nearly 17 euros - there is a limited buffet selection with no hot food and only coffee from a machine, its not worth the money.
Great stay I stayed here for the Euros, as I had tickets for a match in Gelsenkirchen. The hotel staff spoke great English and were very helpful. The room was clean and the noise from the street was minimum. The town of Essen has a few restaurants and bars. The hotel is around a 15 minute walk to the Hauptbahnhof. I would recommend Motel One to other travellers.

This hotel is situated on a favorable location for people who want to have access to public transport (central train and buss station Gelsenkirchen), stopping mails and the Gelsenkirchen city centre. It has simple but sufficient facilities and rooms. And the price to be payed for the room is okay. Because it is situated in the city centre there is always some noise of course.

Decent lower budget hotel in Essen. The rooms are clean and the staff is nice.and helpful. It is centrally located right in the city center. Downside is the non existent sound proof of the rooms. You will hear anything next door and on the hallway. Also the rooms are tiny.
Very centrally located hotel, pretty clean, the rooms are not very big but they offer pretty good quality. The only thing I did not like is that the elevator is not working....hopefully it's only a temporary problem.
I stayed here for business this week and location is right in the middle of the city, which means it's also quite loud outside with many restaurants and people hanging out in the street quite late. Very good Hotel for Events at Veltins Arena. Equipment is adequate and clean. The price is great for the location. Good eating options in the vicinity.
To suggest, as the times before. For 90 Euro in a double class! All very friendly, courteous. Since care of the guest. A point deduction, since the otherwise very nice room with HUGE bathroom, very noisy. If the room is neighboring the faucet run to tear it from the bed. The Breakfast is totally sufficient!
