I need to share an important health warning about Art Hotel Chamarel.

My partner and I were excited for our stay, but within hours of checking in, we developed headaches, throat irritation, and dizziness — all caused by the strong synthetic air fresheners and toilet bowl deodorizers used throughout the property and rooms. We had no choice but to leave after one night.

To their credit, the hotel refunded the rest of our booking without hesitation, and I appreciate that gesture. However, future guests deserve to know: if you are sensitive to chemical fragrances — or even if you think you aren’t — this could be a serious problem.

Many people don’t realize that synthetic air fresheners release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air — including substances like formaldehyde, benzene, and phthalates — which have been linked to respiratory problems, headaches, throat irritation, hormone disruption, and even long-term health risks. Even brief exposure can trigger reactions in healthy individuals, and the effects can be much worse for anyone with allergies, asthma, or chemical sensitivities.

A hotel as charming and beautiful as Art Hotel Chamarel deserves better than masking scents that actually poison the air. I sincerely hope they reconsider their use of synthetic chemicals for the health of all future guests.
