Reviews
Food is excellent, service is very friendly.
The rooms are the weak point. They are more 3 stars than 5. But they are big and many have just amazing views.
Frankly it is so unique it is for me a place not to miss. I went there 6 or 7 times already.
Always magical, particularly with kids.
Highly recommended!
Ladies at the reception and staff at the bar are so professional and welcoming.
However the breakfast was a bit of disappointment. The lady was rolling her eyes at the kids, very unpleasant lady who is supposed to serve breakfast with a smile. To have eggs and bacon with some veggies, tea and coffee, you need to ask her every time. Being family of four you need to address her several times. She messed up the orders, which is not a problem, but as she was very unpleasant you don’t want to ask her anything anymore. She made us leave with a bitter taste.
As a conclusion I would definitely recommend the hotel, we absolutely loved it, but for breakfast I would suggest go to a nearby coffee shop.
The food and service in the restaurant, La Barbacane, was outstanding.
However there were signs that all was not well, our room had a shower over the bath with an ill fitting shower panel which, regardless of our attempts, caused the water to flood the bathroom floor. The basin had a crack in it but was usable. The bathroom linen was not always changed and when they were some items were missing. The bedroom curtains were hanging down at one end and the cord to close them did not work.
The breakfast room was understaffed so the few tried valiantly to serve everyone but ordering a cooked option meant a long wait.
The reception staff offered to make dinner bookings for us a two nearby restaurants, which were both excellent, but on arrival both said they had no booking for us. Once could have been the restaurants fault but twice!
I have no problems with the staff who were all friendly and and mostly very efficient but management need to give more attention to the small details that make a stay truly exceptional.
As it was our 20 year anniversary, I asked the hotel to do something special and despite being given a lovely card and bottle of champagne, I thought I may have been upgraded especially as I am a GOLD ALL member.
The location is perfect within walking distance from everything and the pool was lovely overlooking the Basilica.
Food was amazing from the fresh pastries at breakfast to the exquisite fine dining Michelin menu in the evening.
The only negative would be the lack of room upgrade and service as it seemed that there were too little staff to cope with the demand especially when ordering drinks and food.
Overall, a very romantic stay with lots of character and history. How many hotels are there that are actually within a medieval city? Stunning.
Every member of the staff was incredibly kind, welcoming, and helpful. Their attention to detail and warm hospitality made us feel so well taken care of throughout our stay.
Unfortunately, due to an unexpected incident, we weren’t able to arrive at the ideal time and missed the chance to fully enjoy everything the hotel has to offer. Still, we’re deeply grateful for the wonderful service and unforgettable experience. We hope to return and enjoy it even more next time!
However, for €400 a night, I would expect to be able to climate control our room how we like. It was consistently near 30 degrees. On no night did we sleep in the bed, we instead slept on top of the bed, and didn't sleep very well. The fact that the AC wasn't working as well we'd like was reported to reception, who sent maintenance up to have a look. They explained (in French) that it is working as expected - or, at least that's what I could understand. Not wanting to escalate this and make a fuss, I left it there - we enjoyed our room otherwise. When paying this much, I'd expect to be able to make my room arctic, or a sauna. Much cheaper hotels achieve this without any problem. Not the end of the world, but I really expected better.
The rooms are mostly quite old and slightly tired, and I wouldn't say that they are the highlight of the hotel. The gardens, pool, and restaurant are. La Barbacane was fantastic, but we didn't need to stay in the hotel to experience that.
Also, the hotel just didn't reply to an email I sent before our stay.
The historic hotel is beautiful and is in a prime location in the medieval citadel right next to the Basilica.
The staff in the hotel were all very pleasant, helpful and nothing was too much trouble.
A good choice of food at breakfast and waiter and waitress service for coffee and hot choices on request worked well, you only have to ask and its brought straight to your table - whatever you need.
We were also very impressed with the concierge service on checkout, a very friendly and helpful gentleman, who took us and our luggage to la port Narbonnaise for our pickup. The drive in the small car was an experience in itself.
Overall, a fantastic break ! Thank you.
