Maru Maru Hotel, Zanzibar1 / 50High rating

Zanzibar, Gizenga Street, Stone Town 🧭 Map
Maru Maru was a great find for our group trip to Stone Town. The location was great. We enjoyed the roof top restaurant. The staff was friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend and stay there again.
I booked this hotel for my Mother while she was in Zanzibar. She loved the place. The room was large and very clean. The restaurant offered delectable dishes. When she arrived there was some confusion with the booking. The front desk was so kind and helpful to my Mom and made her arrival a pleasure.
Worth a stay but set your expectations right. Stone town is historical and quite a unique vibe. Loved walking up and down the stone baths between tall buildings with souvenir shops on the ground floor and private residences up top. Hotel itself is nothing spectacular but it does the trick for a one night stay before heading to the beaches. Rooftop restaurant service is annoyingly slow and overall...
I live in Zanzibar and like to spend my free time after work mostly on the rooftop of the Maru maru Hotel. The hotel management as well as the waitresses and employees, such as Hilda, are all incredibly nice, courteous and helpful. I feel very well taken care of. The drinks are all delicious and are prepared quickly. The food also tastes delicious and the view over Stone town completes the whole...
The Maru Maru is a hidden gem in Stone Town. The roof top restaurant is hidden away from view but does provide visitors with view of the ocean and harbor. The place is a busy and popular one so expect some waiting time when ordering. Staff are friendly and helpful. Menu offers a decent selection and Choice. Wind down after your stone town visit and savor the sites and Sounds of this historic part...
Hotel didn’t disappoint - everything seemed to work. Rooms decent, air con worked, hot water available, bathrooms clean and stocked, bed was comfy, breakfast had a good range from cheeses, cold cuts, continental foods and indian dishes. The hotel prides itself with the fact that its hosted many celebrities over the years - photos line the staircase walls leading to the rooftop restaurant (where breakfast...

Zanzibar, Mizingani Road, StoneTown 🧭 Map
I recently had the pleasure of staying at Mizingani, and I must say, it was an incredible experience. The first thing that struck me was its fantastic location. Situated in the heart of Stone Town, it offered easy access to all the historical and cultural treasures this enchanting place has to offer. Upon entering Mizingani, I was captivated by its beautiful furnishings. The decor was a perfect blend...
I stayed in this property three times this year and always an experience worth coming back for. The hotel manager Mr. Imtiaz and Mr. Ahmed at the front desk are always very welcoming, patient and hospitable with me. I was greeted with fresh juice and escorted to my room by Mr. Haj who was fantastic. All the staff are very polite, and the hotel has a great vibe overall. Looking forward to returning...
We really enjoyed
The hotel is conveniently located, the staff are polite and qualified. There is hot water. The bathroom has shampoo, shower gel, dental kit, comb, sewing kit, sanitary bag, body lotion and soap. Every day the room was cleaned, and in the evening they came in to close the window shutters and straighten the canopy. In the neighboring building, it seems, they set up a rehearsal point, so the room was...
A luxury hotel in a great location.
Very decent place. Everything as it should be. I will recommend to my friends. Since yesterday evening we will be here for two more nights. Many thanks to the owner of the hotel. I wish you success!

Very good position, staff very gentle, breakfast wonderful looking the sea
The hotel is in a very good location and decorated beautifully. It is close to all attractions. Staff were friendly and helpful. Rooms are spacious and clean. Breakfast was great with variety of food. However it could have more European options as it attracts a lot of tourists.
The location it's great! The breakfast at the main hotel it's good and diverse! The service it's top as well. The room is really spacious, but might need a bit of refreshing. (Top part the balcony I couldn't enjoy it because of the rain but I think it would be great on a sunny day.
This is for the b&b, which is a 3 minute walk from the main hotel. The b&b doesn’t have a sign, so finding it in the dark is confusing if you’re just there for one night. Check in process was an absolute nightmare. The receptionist had me walking back and forth up 3 flights of stairs multiple times because he never told me where the actual b&b was- instead, he pointed across the street where there...
The guy at the reception was such a nice person!! Everybody was very polite and helpful!! Thanks for the good stay!!
Great place, close to sea, bars and restaurants, room is big, well equipped, so is the bath... Sitting area and washing machine available. Balcony was a great plus.

Realy LOVE this hotel. Super location, beautiful old building with great views from the rooftop restaurant. comfy big rooms, nice pool, and superfriendly en helpful staff. Would defenitely come back if I have the chance.
Stayed here while we spent an evening in Stonetown, lovely hotel with friendly staff. Rooms were clean and well-kept with the charm of a period Zanzibarian building. Private pool with loungers that you can be served both food and drinks at, perfect place to relax amongst a lovely manicured garden. Dinner and drinks on the rooftop terrace to see the sun set over the harbour water. Food was excellent...
Wonderful place in Stonetown, not soo noisy, super friendly staff, amazing view on rooftop, great beds and modern bathrooms. It's a fairly new hotel with a small pool which is quite private. I will be back!!
Great hotel when visiting Stone Town. Friendly staff. Good food and drink choice. Great location for walking down the harbour/ beach. Rooms are a bit dated and dark but welcoming after a hot day in the sun. Nice pool area again small but all you need. Not perfect but a good 4 star hotel....would stay again.
Amazing! Friendly staff. Delicious buffet breakfast. Lovely pool area. Close to the beach/night Market. Would definitely book again. I would however recommend the barmen learn how to make proper cocktails(not too great) Would also be nice if guests were able to buy ice from the hotel? Wifi signal is not very strong in the rooms but that was not major. PS: did not expect the 'government tax ' upon check...
Stayed here for 2 nights while exploring stone town. Very nice spacious room, and on the day we had a late flight they let us stay in another nice (but smaller) room downstairs all day. Great view right on the water from the rooftop bar. Central location. Was quite happy with our stay here.

Nice local style and friendly staff Beware the pool is in another building and 150 m
Well located hotel. The swimming pool is in another building at around 150m. Breakfast should improved a little bit with various foods.
Not exactly the standing we were hoping for but the staff is nice the rooms are cleaned and the location is good.
First of all I would like to thank Hamim and Khadija for the amazing treatment… To be honest all the staff were so nice and friendly even the lady who served the breakfast she was amazing and very nice The hotel very clean and the location is amazing and close to everything we need …. The breakfast so delicious and has many options … the room very comfy and has tea and water and coffee all the time...
The staff are good but the hotel is very old and furniture are shaky. Very limited choices at breakfast. Some rooms without windows

It was incredible. The staff was very accommodating, the resort is absolutely stunning, and there is lots to do on the property. The receptionist Carol is fantastic and I will definitely be coming back here. They made it first time in Zanzibar very memorable.
This is supposed to be a 4 star Resort. Our room towels were changed on day6. We had no fridge in the room. The coffee station was only filled on day 2 and day 6. Upon bringing this to the Resort Managers attention, her reply was simply," we did not put in a fridge because we wanted to save energy. There is no coffee in stock. And she will inform house keeping to replace our room towels." She also...
Great resort but giving it a 3 as they were busy with construction when we were there which is not ideal. Rooms never had any coffee only tea. Amazingly friendly staff. Great view of the ocean, not ideal to go and tan on the beach, but next to the pool and bar is great.
Great resort. Amazing team. The reason it's a 4 and not a five is because of the same breakfast menu everyday and the beach which is not great to swim in because of the mud like sand in the water. Lunch and Dinner on the other hand are great. Amazing SPA as well

The staff and location are great. The room has a nice but historic decor. However, the building is very old and smells musty. Had to buy incense for the room to smell better.
It was a really lovely place and the staff were very helpful and friendly but there was no lift and we were on the top floor... And also the food in the restaurant for lunch and dinner was average at best.. the only other slight issue was that there was no alcohol served at this hotel. It wasn't really a big deal as there is a bar right next door but being able to have a glass of wine with dinner...
The Tembo hotel is very nice .. but we stayed in the house Hotel ...the hotel is like an apartment ... which is far from the hotel . But it's A 4 star , the breakfast was amazing, the waiters went above and beyond. I would definitely recommend the hotel, not the house, which is like apartments, and the rooms are a bit smaller and the facility isn't that great. But they will take your luggage all the...
Pros Great location Lovey view of the beach Allowed late checkout (but the checkout time is a little early at 10am!) Large selection at breakfast Beautiful infinity pool and a lot of different seating areas Cleaning staff were nice Cons Staff were slow. I had issues (safe not working, bulb broken) and reported it 3x and it was not fixed. Room small and dark and right by the pool but luckily it was...
Very good location for exploring Stone Town. Family room in the main building was a good size for a family of four. The pool was a nice way to cool down in the afternoon. But the breakfast was absolutely horrible, especially at that price, and I don't understand why they had to do some repairs immediately above our room at midnight. I had to call reception and ask them to stop. Check-in was also a...
Fantastic sunset dinner. Great atmosphere, on a deck. Spacious. Prices: Medium to high.

We went to this hotel to have coffee. We really liked the design of the hotel, lots of interesting interior items. And the coffee was great!
Fantastic interior. Takes you back 120 years for sure. Very atmospheric. But the food in the restaurant is not great, especially the pizza. Need to work on that.
A chic hotel in an old style, there is a swimming pool, a huge plus. After the stuffy city, go straight to it
You live as if in a palace-museum. Everything is so suffocating with history, well, or on the palm. I liked it. The pool is cool. The terrace too. Cons - I would like newer and better quality bed linen and a modern split system instead of a noisy and ineffective window air conditioner.
Beautiful rooms, friendly service, good breakfast, great location, complete with a rooftop view of Stone Town and a swimming pool
Clean rooms . Beautiful hotel . Our room was relatively small I guess depends on prices. rooftop is amazing . Go see it ! Team in very nice and friendly. Breakfast is easy and simple. Great affordable stay at stone town Zanzibar

Decent clean hotel. Has wifi, free breakfast and air conditioning. Thr rooftop restaurant is quite nice with a beautiful view.
Really beautiful place in the center, walking distance from almost everything! I loved the breakfast that comes included in the price and the hospitality of the receptionist! The only thing is the wifi does not work in the 3rd floor and the hotwater does not work in the bathroom as weel.
Good location (closer to the center), very safe at night. Friendly and very helpful staffs. There were always check that we did not need anything. It was very nice of them and it made me feel more comfortable. Cleanliness is fine but room could be refresh as they looks a little bit outdated. Beautiful hotel in the middle of Stone Town! Very good location. Rooms were kept clean and comfortable, beds came with mosquito netting. The restaurant up top offered great food with good service and the accompanying view was breathtaking! Also let us keep our luggage there while after we checked out and were busy during the day doing activities. Thanks for the great stay!
Rooftop view is nice while having breakfast and at sunset.
A nice place in the heart of Stone town. Very lovely view from the rooftop restaurant and the food is delightful. Not the best bathroom but you have electricity and hot water all day. The staff is lovely and always ready to help you. There is a everyday cleaning.

Review: enjoy the perfect Chicken Biryani at this restaurant with an amazing sea view in Stonetown. Food: the Chicken Biryani is a perfect blend of spices - fresh cinnamon, cardamom, clove. The other dishes are okay/good, but nothing special in particular. Price: expensive pricing for local conditions. The prices are like European cities (starting with ~16€ per main course). It's a toursit destination...
I was here in 2004 as an 11 year old kid and I still think about this place and their fries. The view of the night sky. The architecture. The smell of the kitchen. All burned into my memory all these years later. Thank you to the fry cook all those years ago.
Africa House Hotel is an old historic building in Stone Town. Great location, comfortable, spacious, beautiful room and includes a good breakfast. Good value price. The restaurant has the most amazing terrace overlooking the ocean to enjoy the sunset. Good cocktails and menu card. The staff are very nice and kind. The perfect venue to see the sun setting over the ocean. I really love this old place, cold drinks and a good vibe. Go for at least one sundowner
Africa house sunset bar sea view was amazing & historical place. have a wonderful place to fun & joy.. one of the best place in stone town. also have a Tanzanite shop.. best place to buy Tanzanite jewellers & stone.
Really nice Chinese restaurant in Africa. I would say this is not a localised Chinese restaurant as aChinese. Worth to visit if u want to have real Chinese food here.

Pros: close to the airport, customer service is impeccable, place is surprisingly clean, seaside view is mesmerizing. Cons: no alcohol, short menu, no alcohol... NO ALCOHOL. Would definitely recommend for a short stay.
Such a nice sun set view and a roof top food point
No, not a 5-star luxury resort, but a cozy, clean place to hang your hat while you tour and explore. Great and attentive staff. Cheap price and attentive staff. About 20 minutes from airport, longer with traffic.
The staff are very professional and welcoming. The hotel is extremely neat and even smells fresh. The rooms are spacious and have all amenities including a fully functional AC. Above all the price is affordable
A calm and quite place near to sea side. Absolutely clean and healthy environment with delicious food and free room service facilities. Friendly staffs and a team of well trained people who always love to offer help.

Conveniently located within walking distance of the ferry terminal and major sites of Stone Town. Has a good view of the water from the roof top restaurant where the food served is edible. Room is decent, but bathroom could use some updating and re-grouting.

We booked Shaba Boutique quite last minute when our trip changed slightly, but so glad we did. This is definitely not a 2* star hotel, and we would highly recommend staying here. We booked a suite on the first floor. The room was so spacious, and comfortable, and had everything we needed. The air conditioning and fans were very welcome. The whole hotel is spotlessly clean and the decor is stunning...
Lovely owners and workers. When the air conditioning wouldn't turn back on in my room, they were able to fix it quickly. There was a small leak in the ceiling of my room the first night but nothing serious. Overall, great place to stay for 2-3 nights if you aren't looking for something fancy or luxurious. Not someplace for people looking to lounge in their room. Location was great for access to anything...
This is a great hotel in the middle of stone town which really punches above its weight in terms of the price range it is in! Very friendly staff, and a breakfast spread that surprises. We had a two-bedroom room, and the only downside was that the aircon in the main room was noisy and only had a very cold setting. But with a fan in the ceiling in both rooms and a functioning aircon, we got by just...
We stayed one night in this hotel after arriving on Zanzibar from mainland Tanzania. The style of the hotel is charming and its location is great to explore the city. The breakfast is really great with a lot of options, including local food...
The hotel is meticulously maintained and beautifully decorated. The cleanliness is remarkable, and the staff are exceedingly friendly and accommodating. However, the breakfast options were somewhat limited and basic, which was a slight disappointment. I would stay again ☺️

What an amazing hotel in the heart of Stone Town. Beautifully appointed rooms with a lovely rooftop restaurant and lots of nooks and crannies to explore. Breakfast was good. Highly recommended
The location in stone town is very convenient. The rooms are very unique and a cool experience. It's nice to have a safe inside to lock up valuables while you explore stone town. Super nice and accommodating staff and the location is unique and quaint. Located in the heart of Stone Town, their restaurant and pool area are trendy and a hidden gem within the hotel property. Rooms weren’t great, but everything else was great for the cheaper price :) They also offer good airport transport. Very happy!
Good place to stay for a few nights. Comfortable bed, air conditioning is working, hot water, restaurant and bar is well priced and food tastes decent. Cute signs around the hotel and small gestures like night snacks left in room. I would say this is more of a good hostel than hotel. I stayed in the Antonio Garden Hotel at the end of a week's stay in Zanzibar and after coming from a few days by the beach in Bwejuu. The best hotel in Stone Town in the price range up to $40! Buffet breakfast. Clean pool. Nice staff. There are no scales at the reception, we left for the airport with suitcases at random, it turned out to be 8 kg overweight. But the Zanzibar service was fine, they were just too lazy to be distracted by this;)
