Abacus in Sesto San Giovanni

Observations from my one-night stay in November, 2025. Pros: Very convenient for getting around Milan by subway -- only 180 meters from a red-line stop. Located just outside the zone with traffic restrictions for older (Euro 5) diesel cars. Low price if booked in advance. Clean rooms. Breakfast included. Rates include parking if you don't book through an intermediary. Adequate for basic stays. Cons: High price -- more than $200 USD for a basic room -- for not having booked my room far enough in advance; and uniformly depressing aesthetics, both inside and out. The exterior of this run-down edifice would have been right at home in a row of dismal concrete Soviet-era apartments. The charmless architecture, an unwelcoming facade, dismal landscaping, lack of a place to park while checking in, lack of exterior signage, a dingy garage, awkward access from the garage to the hotel, and tall scaffolding enveloping a large part o the building added up to a discouraging first impression. The inside was no less off-putting: worn, stained, dirty carpeting and stairs; cheap furniture; tacky signs; uninviting interior design, chipped and frayed interior trim and fixtures. The furnishings of my room were well below average in quality. This hotel technically may have had the minimum of amenities to qualify for four stars in Italy, but the quality, aesthetics, upkeep, and cleanliness of the establishment barely merit two stars in comparison to two- and three-star hotels where I've stayed in the past.
