Reviews
The views of the harbour and ferry terminal are excellent.
Lovely pool area with an internal phone to place orders for food and drinks from the bar and the service was great.
The breakfasts are spot on with lots of choice and the restaurant and snack food is up with the best I've had anywhere.
All in all it was a very enjoyable stay.
Positives:
• Beautiful view of the harbour
• Quiet room
• Excellent and quiet airconditioning
• Very good cleaning
• Lots of wardrobe space
• You can leave luggage in a storage room after checkout
• Friendly reception staff
• Good location if you arrive late to Gozo, it's right above the harbour
Negatives:
• Terrible cappuccino at breakfast
• Bad cappuccino at the bar
• Breakfast generally not good
• In the evening it's dangerous to walk with your luggage from the ferry to the hotel, because all the cars park on the pavement so you need to walk on the road where they drive very fast
• In the bathroom there were big holes in the wall around the taps
• Taps and pipelines have lots of wear and tear, very visible through the transparent sink
Overall it was fine for a few nights.
There were however two things that took away from our experience of staying there.
1) the mattress on our bed was very uncomfortable. It felt like a very old spring mattress, and the pillows were like giant airbags that slowly deflated into nothing. It was very difficult to sleep comfortably.
2) The breakfast room is understaffed. There were only two (very hard working) staff members to check guests in for breakfast, clear tables, and check the contents of the buffet, to know when things needed to be replenished. This meant that on several mornings there were significant delays in being seated and often particular food items would run out and it would be a long time before they were filled again. I want to point that this is not a service staff problem. The staff members on hand were constantly busy, and were totally lovely, kudos to them.
I would happily stay at the grand again, but next time I'll ask about mattresses and pillows in advance, and I'll have to schedule breakfast at a quieter time to avoid the waiting and empty trays and bread baskets.
Centipedes in the hallways
Missing ceiling panels
4 stars? Zobbi
Bathtub cracked and leaking
Empty teabag packets left in room not replaced
Photos are misleading, not the same rooms as shown on the photos
No buffet dinner option
Construction in front of hotel, loud construction in indoor pool area and very loud in our room
Construction woke us up 8am, SUPER loud
Waited 15 minutes for drinks at happy hour, we were the only table being served, got us 2 drinks instead of 4 so took that long for 2 drinks?
Friendly reception staff, but a bit creepy
You have to wait in line to be seated for breakfast??? Told us people are waiting before us, 7 empty tables inside and only one couple waiting on Friday
Bathrobes scratchy and uncomfortable, no slippers.
No plates at breakfast no selection of food
Took our cutlery twice
Water tastes like tap water
Bath robes made for little people???
Paid 350 for two nights. Skip this hotel and go literally anywhere else
****BE AWARE THERE IS BUILDING WORKS RIGHT BELOW THE POOL AREA******
It was noisy and I would say will be going on for a long, long time. They were only at the foundations. I had noise cancelling headphones on and still heard the banging. I wasn’t informed of the building works, if I had of been I would have avoided.
Positives - location, straight off the boat and it’s there.
- staff very friendly
- breakfast was very good though the sausages could have done with a little longer in the oven.
Negatives - room I had was worn.
One side of the patio window had blown with left over damp within the double glazing unit, looked awful.
- WIFI was awful hardly connected in my room.
- balcony, there was a crack in the wall that supported the metal retaining gate looking out. The metal part of the balcony wobbled.
- toilet seat wouldn’t stay up, I am a male and it’s kinda of important. Someone had tried to keep both parts up by sawing off the plastic bungs, it didn’t work. Every time I lifted the seat of fell straight down again.
- stains on all the table/tops in the bedrooms.
- TV had a permanent line straight down the middle, needs replacing.
- bathroom - shower taps are well worn with the metal peeling. Shower head is only suitable for a 5ft person. Black mould within grout around bath.
- outside communal hallway to my door smelt badly of curry. I was in room 312. In n fact some other parts of the hotel smelt of curry.
- one of the mornings someone in the adjacent room was hammering at 0820 going on for an hour.
- due to being close to the port it is noisy, you can hear a lot so if you are after quiet this might not be the location.
Pool. Used the pool and the water at one end was dirty. Could clearly see dirt covering the top of the water. There were around 6 wasps dead and other insects. Didn’t get in. Overall the pool surrounding were poor with peeling render on some of the walls and cracks. There are tables around the pool and the one I used buckled when I put something on it. Three bits of plastic tubing had been wedged in the centre of the table to support it. Whole area is covered with fake grass, looks awful. Last time I was here the concrete around the pool needed attention, this was clearly the cheap option using fake grass.
Believe this is rated as 4 star, lucky if it’s a 2 star and can’t believe all the positive feedback this hotel gets. Like I said, staff were spot on just the hotel is very worn especially my rooms. Not so Grand.
Breakfast was good but I found the seats too hard and uncomfortable. Maybe in the refurb they will change that. Great views from the balcony overlooking the harbour and Malta in the distance.
