Reviews
The location is convenient, but head west (left out the main door) and it gets pretty bad - I got off at a wrong metro and had to backtrack a little and it was sketchy (syringes on the sidewalk, etc.) from that direction. From the hotel walking southeast, it's not too far to walk to the old city or the old port through some mildly rough looking sections, but the metro is very close. So location is a double-edged sword - great for transit, no too great for environment. If you just sit around a hotel on vacation, then this isn't for you. If you are out touring around and just need a place to sleep, this works fine. Sadly, there's a lot of graffiti around Marseille so you can't judge the area solely on the presence of it - there's a lot in the beautiful historic narrow streets too.
Skip the breakfast - this is one spot that they can control and improve. The staff was friendly, but there was little selection and it was just not appetizing. It was a totally different experience than my experience days earlier at the Saarbrücken Holiday Inn. I tried the eggs each morning but they were cold. I simply grabbed a croissant and some juice and left for the metro to go do things and eat elsewhere. Frankly, they might be better off just ending the breakfast and not offering one. There are so many options around the city and even some in the station across the street, I believe not having one in the hotel would be fine, or keep it very simple and light with only cold items - pastries, breads, cereals, yogurt, fruit, and juices.
I'd stay here again, especially if I have an early morning train to catch. You can't beat this location for that.
[edit 9/13: Their help line promised a refund for this stay over a month ago within several days, and I still haven't received a refund. I have had to call back several times to hound down the refund.]
I generally enjoy Holiday Inns because they are generally consistent quality and have good breakfast. I chose this one because they were right across from the train station, and I needed to leave my bags for the day before the train. However, the convenience of the location was outweighed by mold and ants in our room. I have attached photos for proof. It’s one thing to have mold in the corner of the shower or something, but it was everywhere, even on the shower head 🤢. There were also about 10 or more ants in the room. Additionally, our hand soap was very watery, which I thought was just the way their soap was, until I used the restroom on the first floor and realized that they have normal soap elsewhere but had just watered ours down instead of refilling it. The employees were generally nice, to their credit. But clearly someone in charge of cleaning has not been doing their job. If I was willing to stay in a health hazard, I would like to have at least paid 1/3 the price of this one.

The ordeal began with a fire evacuation at 7:30 am, forcing all guests outside. This turned out to be a false alarm, causing unnecessary stress and inconvenience.
The room conditions were unacceptable. The shower corners had mold, and the floors were dirty and clearly had not been vacuumed. When we asked for help with the air conditioning which would not turn on, the staff came to our room and dismissed our concerns, suggesting that we were just not used to the local climate. This was despite the fact that there was virtually no air coming from the vents, making the room unbearably hot. We did not sleep all night due to the heat, only to be woken up early by the alarm.
Overall, the customer service was horrible, and the conditions were far below what I expected from a Holiday Inn Express. This was a terrible stay, and I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. Pending a full refund. I will update if we do not receive a full refund.
The baseboard and the ceiling is peeling off a LOT. There is some black mould in the corner of the shower. Absolutely no pressure in shower. No way to regulate temperature. Set too hot for the night. Can’t open the windows because it’s way to loud. Oh and the toilet paper and Kleenex are like sand paper. The towels are very thin. And they did not leave out face cloth.
Overall I’m disappointed for the price I paid. A hostel would have been just as good probably.
The hotel itself should drop a star. It is very rundown and in desperate need of refurbishments. The carpet in the room was very dirty and so were the walls. The bathroom was ok but the ventilation was not working and water pressure was low despite being only at the 3rd floor.
Cherry on top: 6AM we were woken up by a fire drill & evacuation due to what was seemingly a kitchen malfunction.
Make sure to adjust your expectations to the lowest level of 3* before choosing this hotel.
