We loved our stay in this hotel. So many great activities going on everyday, the entertainment team were fantastic always doing something. Shot number bingo was so funny. The food is good for an all inclusive. Pools are clean and don't smell. W eare gutted we won't see the greatest show as we are flying out this evening. My daughter says the best part was ice-cream all day and lollipops at every meal time. The accommodation was spot on, quirky open air 2nd toilet and shower too. Made my day. We up graded our room to a bedroom suite and this gave so much extra space. We loved our holiday, thank you so much. See you again one day

This hotel is far from 4 star, spent a week in December, when it rained the roof in room leaked water running through light fittings when reported to reception was told not to worry about it a lot of the rooms leak nothing was done about it, the plaster was falling off the walls in bedroom, mould around shower , not hot water from tap in sink, bathroom door didn't shut , the door that joined our room to next door was unlocked it took to complaints to get someone just to come over and lock it.the afternoon snacks are the leftovers from lunch time and are dried up and cold .the lift didn't work the whole time was there so anyone with disability had to go all around of hotel to get to pool and food area .the whole place is tied and needs updating

stayed her 5th to the 12th December. all inc basis stayed here 3 years ago and we noticed some improvements and one area not so good. Pros, quick check in comfortable room [with safe at no extra cost} internet but with some "dead areas" around the hotel but overall good staff very good, guys at the pool bar serving always polite with a smile food was OK, 2 BBQ, one at lunch and one at dinner, superb! Amstel beer very good, red wine ok from pool bar and restaurant but not good at top bar {i couldnt drink it} good tip for the beer is that you can buy a pint glass {pack of 5 1.80 euros from onsite shop meaning less trips to the bar. at far end of playa blanca so a good flat walk into main shops, bars etc or taxi always an option which hotel will phone for if required. flamingo beach 10 to 15 minute walk and very good. cons al a carte we had was the italian and has gone down from last visit with the quality not very good at all. pool area has some areas in desperate need of replacement with the slabs but it is open all year round so not easy to arrange i imagine but not impossible. when i go away i like to try and forget about the uk but it reminded me of our roads!! overall great stay, we were lucky with the weather and im sure that helped.

We stayed here in December and thought the hotel was pretty much in line with what we expected for the cost. It was cheap, and a good location for exploring the island. Food - it was average, there was enough variety for meat eaters to not instantly get bored of the buffet. My partner is vegetarian and commented that the veggie food was quite salty and oily so that did get a boring quickly. The Italian restaurant was alright. We did not eat at the snack bar. The buffet room is very echoey so I would suggest getting a table outside. Overall 6/10 Facilities - the room was spacious, comfortable but the bedding was worse for wear. I think the rooms are one of the better areas of the hotel. The main pool area is loud during the day with activities. If you want to relax by the pool, you might want to sit further out. There is music during the day but I think that is for the tourists who want to drink and chat by the pool. We would have preferred to have a cosy space for the evening as all the communal areas were loud and echoey so it did make it difficult for evenings where you didn't have plans. Staff - friendly enough. They were quick in all aspects of service. It was my birthday towards the end of the holiday and we displayed some birthday cards which the staff noticed and provided a bottle of bubbly without us saying anything which was a lovely touch ☺️. There was an array of tourists here. We came as a group of friends who just wanted a cheap hotel located somewhere that had some winter sun and where we could explore the island. And this hotel delivered exactly that. I would probably say the hotel is more 3 star than 4 but overall it was a good holiday and the hotel served it's purpose for us. We did contact the hotel in advance to ask for rooms to be close to one another and they accommodated that so we really appreciated this. I wouldn't say this hotel is designed for couples who want an intimate and cosy holiday, but more geared towards friends or those using the hotel as a base.

Me and my partner stayed here for 4 nights (Dec 2025) 23 & 21 yrs old. The check in was quick and easy - receptionist provided us with a map as well as some other useful info like meal times etc. We arrived at night and we struggled to find our room at first, but we soon figured out the layout of the room numbers. Room was spacious, tv in the front area as well as the bedroom. The room had a fridge (no water provided), a kettle with some tea and coffee supplies, and a safe (I believe you have to pay a deposit to use the safe but we didn’t use it ourselves). Shower was easy to use and spacious. The window in our bedroom was very leaky. It rained while we were there and water was basically dripping in constantly. Bed was comfy, a few pillows are provided as well as a couple of blankets. There is a main pool area surrounded by loungers. There are also a few comfy lounger seats. There is a second pool that is more suited to swimming, it was a good sun trap, we stayed in this area all day. As we stayed in December, the pool was freezing cold. We knew this arriving but just a warning to anyone not prepared for it. The beach is a 5-10 minute walk from the hotel. Flamingo beach is beautiful, there are a few bars and shops on the front too. Breakfast was good, the restaurant has a couple of coffee machines and a couple of juice machines. Pastry selection was small, but the cooked offering was good. Usual English breakfast items as well as an omelette station. Lunch in the main restaurant was quite plain and repetitive. We didn’t try the snack bar area but it was a burger station with minimal toppings and hot dogs, and chips. Dinner was more of the same, we found it to be quite repetitive and were eating basically the same food every night. The desserts however were very good with plenty of choices of cakes. Drinks are Pepsi and Kas lemon and orange. Cocktails are premixed out of a machine. Off brand spirits are available too. There is a mini disco at night for the kids (my girlfriend got dragged up to do some dances 😂) as well as some shows in the theatre area. We saw an acrobatic show which was quite enjoyable. There was also a singer on in the lobby bar one night. Overall, we enjoyed our stay, the pool facilities were good with lots of sunbeds. However, we felt letdown with the choices of food and the quality of drinks at the bar.

We have arrived home today from this hotel. We only stayed Thursday until today. We didn’t arrive on Thursday until 9pm. We were checked in straight away and were told we had a free upgrade on our room to a suite. Which we were happy about. We were told they were doing a late night buffet for later arrivals at 10pm. We unpacked and got down stairs for 9:50. We were shocked to see how small the pool bar was and it was full of people so nowhere to sit. We went to wait outside the restaurant for it to open. It got to 10pm and other guests were also waiting, someone knocked on the window and the man inside did a cross sign to say they weren’t opening. We thought maybe he wasn’t ready so waited a bit longer about 10:10 we were all still waiting and the staff inside were just staring at us. I went up to reception to confirm it was meant to be opening at 10 and she said it was and said she would phone downstairs. There was a bit of back and forth on the phone and eventually she came off the phone and said he is opening up for you now. I went back down to the restaurant where we waited yet another 5 minutes before they eventually opened it up. The food was bad! The bread was stale. The cucumbers were either dry or sludgy, it was honestly not worth the wait. It was all left overs from the lunch/dinner and it looked a mess and unappetising and all needed chucking out. Our room was ok, it was a bit dated but fine. It had two bathrooms one was an open roofed bathroom and one was a normal bathroom. My daughter had the pull out sofa bed in the living area and i was in the bedroom with my other daughter. The room was absolutely freezing during the night, with just thin sheets to cover us. The bed was uncomfortable and hard and gave me really bad backache. There was a tv in the room but it only had one English Channel which didn’t work, it was just a blank black screen. The breakfast looked good however when we ate it it tasted horrible and was really cold. There was a horrible smell of dirty plates in the dining area too which was off putting. There is a lovely beach about 15 minutes walk out to the left then left again a bit further down. Then a further 10 minute walk into a small town area with a few shops. The pools aren’t heated so as you can imagine in December they were freezing. We just dipped a toe in and decided not to bother. There were lots of sun beds to choose from. We were looking forward to trying lunch as we were quite hungry after the poor late dinner the night before and the horrible breakfast. Again, we were extremely disappointed. Almost all the food was cold. The only thing that was warm was the chips. The hot dogs were absolutely disgusting and made me feel sick, again stone cold. The pizza was edible but most people were going for this due to everything else being so bad so it was almost always gone when we went up to have a look. We then unfortunately got hit by the storm which began about 5pm on the Friday. We had gone out

Rating: ★★☆☆☆ (2.5/5 — not a true 4-star experience)

After staying at HL Rio Playa Blanca, I genuinely don’t understand how this hotel is classed as a 4-star. In my opinion, it feels much closer to 2.5 stars at best.

Food & Dining — Edible but disappointing

The food is edible, but that’s really the best I can say. Most dishes were cold, lacked variety, and felt very repetitive. For a hotel advertising itself at this standard, I expected at least consistently hot meals and a bit more effort with the options.

Rooms — Spacious but neglected

The rooms are large, which is a positive, but they desperately need some TLC and a proper deep clean. There’s a general feeling of the rooms being dated and poorly maintained, which takes away from what could otherwise be comfortable accommodation.

Internet & Technology — Shockingly poor for 2025

The internet connection is unbelievably bad — almost unusable at times. In 2025, this is mind-blowing, especially from a hotel group of this size.
To make things worse, the room had two old smart TVs that constantly restarted every 5 minutes. The remote control was damaged, and only half the buttons worked. It honestly feels like the hotel hasn’t invested in technology for a decade. I can’t understand why they don’t replace the TVs or upgrade the WiFi — both are basic expectations nowadays.

Overall

There are some positives such as the spacious rooms and decent layout of the resort, but the lack of maintenance, poor food standards, and outdated technology really overshadow everything else.
HL Rio Playa Blanca has potential, but right now it does not deliver anywhere near a 4-star experience. A few key upgrades and deeper attention to detail could make a big difference, but until then, it’s far from what you’d expect for the price and rating.

Awesome team, very engaging and fun to be around. Highly recommended

Hotel - see Google maps, about 20 mins walk to Playa Blanca sea front. The hotel itself is very large, and based on idividual bungalow premises with a veranda. Walls are thin, so its easy to hear those next door!

Rooms benefit from air con.

1st complaint. Our room wasnt cleaned for 4 days, even though we complained, but we eventually received an apology and had our towels changed. We did find a live cock roach in our room and a spider or two.

2nd complaint -Outside our room was a open sewage drain that was pumping in water, and absolutely stunk of sewage. Nothing was done despite complaining!!

Food - was generally good, but appeared the same food every day, for every meal, and was disappointing.

Pools - Were busy with the usual 'towel on beds' issue. There was plenty of space though and no real need for it. We used the large pool (not main pool), and was much quieter, but a 2 min walk to the pool bar.

Drinks - Take your own plastic cup! (pint size), because they user small cardboard 'Pepsi' cups for all types of drinks (awful).

The place appears to be dated and requires renovation in parts.

Entertainment- The staff worked hard and tried their best to appease holiday makers. The shows were 'alright', but nothing special!

Overall - Score 3/5 . Value for mone, but this hotel could be so much better. If I paid more then I would have been disappointed.

Would I go back? I think I would rather pay more for better quality, but like I said, it was cheap, so not that disapointed.
