Reviews
I did notice at the bottom of my receipt from Southwest that an additional $268 in "resort fees" would be charged at the hotel. But that did not prepare me for the $419 EXTRA that I ended up having to pay when I checked in. Just to clarify what everyone else is saying about the $89 amenity fee, it's applied PER DAY, which is over $300 for a poor excuse of an amenity pack.
On top of that, I had a $125 security deposit hold placed on my card. After checking out, a mysterious $25 charge was also placed on my card... So I will be disputing that with my credit card. I tried emailing their billing email as instructed by their phone line (with no option to speak with a live rep, mind you), but the email was bounced back to me as their email was an invalid address.
Aside from the shady pricing and no option to decline the amenities package, the room itself was mediocre. Stains all over the carpet and small bathroom. Nothing to rave about. But I guess it was manageable. With the money you end up spending on this (Close to $1,000 for three nights), you're better off getting a stay somewhere closer to where all the action of Chicago is through a more reputable business.
If you are a bride considering the hotel for a getting ready space/room block, please read through this entire review. I would feel awful if another sweet bride had to experience what mine did this weekend.
Long Story Short: My bride had the penthouse suite booked for the weekend, as most do. Unfortunately, when the MOB went to check in, the front desk told her the room was given to another couple. The room the other couple had booked was covered with bugs due to the terrace patio door being left open. Instead of reassigning the couple elsewhere, the front desk thought it would be best to upgrade them to the Penthouse Suite--even though there was already a reservation prebooked. As you can imagine, my bride was absolutely shocked as she booked this specific hotel for the suite and the suite only. To make matters worse, the hotel staff couldn't have been more rude to the MOB. When I touched based with management, they were unwilling to comp anything and even mentioned that throwing in 'chairs and tables' at no cost was a suiteable upgrade. Truly unbelieveable!
If you already have room blocks confirmed, without attrition, I would highly recommend moving them immediately.
The hotel aspect should be the least stressful component of your wedding weekend (for both you and guests), which was not our experience. I promise there are other amazing suites out there and hotels that will make you the number one priority!
Unfortunately this hotel chain for what it's charging which is a mandatory fee of $89 each night for drinks, breakfast and other perks you will most likely never use. For the amount you end up paying this hotel is not worth it. The pillows were not great, elevator is cheeks, the seats in the breakfast area are falling apart, everything is so worn down for a hotel charging nearly $900 for 3 nights you would expect better. It's really scummy and I would avoid this place. Most people book hotel rooms third party it's just the modern way of booking hotels. Room service never came which is pretty disappointing considering the price you pay.
Avoid this hotel, there are nicer ones in downtown Chicago. The value gets worse if you have children. Only stayed because everything was already booked when we arrived.
Transportation: It is about 12 minutes walk from the nearest subway station, which is a little distance
Hotel environment: Clean, atmospheric and quiet, a good choice away from the downtown
Breakfast: There are not many varieties, but the food quality is good, but it is the same every day, which is a little disappointing
Complaint: The taxes paid at the store are really incomprehensible! Be sure to communicate clearly with the platform before booking
Other reviews have cited bait-and-switch hidden fees. These seemed to involve third-party vendors, and at checkout I witnessed other guests’ upset as they contested their bills. The hotel’s website is more transparent on fees — if you read the fine print. The bar and breakfast vouchers are not freebies but are included in the fees. Both were good values for what was offered.
A glitch in the system resulted in my receiving email and text confirmations multiple times a day, and even after check-in. I tried calling the hotel about that, and about other questions I had, but despite persistent efforts I was unable to reach the front desk using the hotel’s direct number. A toll-free number took me to an outsourced service contractor who couldn’t get through to the hotel desk either, and read back what I’d already seen on the website. Finally I used their AI assistant and got the information I needed.
Parking tip: Download a Chicago parking app. I used SpotAngels and we found free street parking a block from the hotel. There are numerous parking garages near the hotel, with much cheaper rates than the hotel’s valet, but they don’t accommodate larger vehicles like ours, and they don’t have unlimited in-and-out privileges.
Now to the hotel itself. It is in a lovely old building with beautiful historical touches, a nice bar and breakfast area, and celebrity photos on display throughout the main and lower levels. After we unpacked, we took a long nighttime walk around the neighborhood, which is charming and architecturally significant and felt completely safe. We couldn’t have asked for a better location that made even an overnight business trip feel like a vacation.
Our room did not live up to the rest of building and its surroundings. Consistent with other reviewers, we found it basic and drab, with a combination of dated saggy furniture and tacky plastic updates. I wouldn’t have wanted to hang out there all day, but we weren’t there for that. The bed (though very low) was comfortable enough, the room (though too bright at dawn because the curtains weren’t room-darkening) was quiet enough, and the breakfast bar was ample and tasty enough to nourish us through the day.
On balance — and having benefited from other reviewers’ reports and my own homework to know what and what not to expect — I’m very satisfied with our experience and would gladly stay here again.
1. 30+mins check in. Granted, long lanes are typical during peak hours, but queue moves especially slow here due to 1) only two front desk staffs 2) they have to explain the $89.95 mandatory guest package + 18% recovery fee.
2. Guest call rarely answered
I have to phone multiple times to get hold of someone. Front desk rarely answer the call. Oh they don’t have coffee machine(can’t speak for other rooms) because in-room coffee service is included in the mandatory guest package. Ironically, how to get your coffee service if no one is answering the phone?
3. Breakfast buffet is good, but made-to-order breakfast is horrible. (Buffet only weekend?)
For the latter, after sitting myself, as the sign posts, I waited 15 mins before a waitress came and asked what do I want to order. BUT, I was never given the menu. “Can I order anything?” so I asked, naïvely. The waitress sighed and handed me the menu.
With hope I ordered the American breakfast, with hash brown and fruit cup on the side. Hope dimmed after overhearing the couple by the window received foods bearing little resemblance of what they’ve ordered. After reading 40 pages of Stephen King, couple news articles and overnight unread email, I could be patient no more. Where’s ma food??
Clock hit 10:00 a waitress appeared from behind the scene and immediately she shut the front door and closed the curtain. Show’s over - at least they were quick when call it a day.
Where’s ma food??
Finally a gentlemen noticed and asked what did I order. “American breakfast, hash browns and fruit cup on the side.” - Thank you. He returned almost immediately with the American breakfast with missing sausages(the ones at the buffet have a mild apple taste which was good) - hash browns have apparently taken its spot - and no fruit cup. I quickly went through half the omelette with already solidified cheese in it and rushed out.
This review is not about getting compensated or sorting things out with the hotel, but to help my fellow travelers avoid a hospitality desert.
