Good value hotel, but spoiled by food poisoning.
If we had not had food poisoning I would be giving it full marks.
The rooms are sufficiently equipped, spacious and comfortable.
The service at the bar and restaurant is good also, with a good selection.
The pool, although cold, was great, and we can put that down to the time of year.
We knew the location was a little walk away from town before we arrived, so no complaints.
What I can't forgive, and unfortunately will prevent my return, is myself, and my youngest daughter vomiting violently, and without being too graphic, out of the other end also!
These were both on separate days. So it couldn't be pin-pointed to a certain meal or food. But we were all inclusive and ate at the hotel so we can only put it down to something we ate there.
For me it was only on the second night of a 6 day holiday, and I didn't really have much of an appetite after that. My daughter had the same issue the following evening and she didn't eat much after that either.
It is really unfortunate because the staff were very hard working, and the hotel itself seems very good.
Reading previous reviews, now we are home, this seems to be a recurring issue at the hotel, so there is potentially an issue with food storage or hygiene in the preparation area.
I don't like to leave bad reviews, because I can see how hard the staff work, but if people don't report it, then there can be no solution.
I did tell the lady when I was checking out, and she did seem generally concerned, and took a note of the issue and said they would look into it.

While my stay at the hotel was pleasant overall, I was surprised to find that certain amenities I consider standard for a 4- or 5-star hotel were missing. Complimentary drinking water, coffee and tea, a bath towel, and a chair in the room are basic expectations at this level of service. I hope the hotel considers including these to enhance the guest experience

Stayed here for a week 6 of us.We all ended up with sore throat’s I think the smell of the drains around the pool gave us this. The area around the hotel had road works very noisy and dusty and we had to walk around the road works to get to the beach. Other hotels and businesses in the area were shut. The hotel itself other than the smell was very good, plenty of good food clean rooms.

Absolutely horrendous hotel please read reviews before booking don’t make same mistake

Informed them we would be staying with a disabled child who would need a proper bed and they have provided him a pull out bed there is no space in the rooms and he is already very distressed

Had to argue with the women at the reception to provide a kettle to make his medication which he needs several times throughout the day

Was refused bigger Room despite willingness to pay any amount needed.

Absolutely gutted and am looking at flights home because the staff are very rude.
This hotel is not friendly towards their disabled customers and

I’ve been here a few times over the years and it’s slowly got worse until now! This will be my last stay. We have 4 more days here and can’t wait to leave if we’re honest. The receptionists are amazing very nice but limited to what they can do and control.
Dinner very limited and not restocked as it should be when things are used. Cutlery dirty daily and the waiters are extremely rude we needed a 12 person table and asked if they could arrange one for us for him to say no only 2 tables available about 50ft from one another. The same waiter then shouted at my young daughter for “being in his way” he’s lucky I didn’t hear him! Pool dirty. Rooms smell like the sewers and a couple of the family had to be moved from there room because the smell physically burnt your nose. Bar staff are nice. Entertainment wasn’t bad fair to say there very understaffed if you want a coffee forget it! You’ll be waiting 30/45 minutes. Really gone down hill and planning to stay out the hotel as much as possible for the rest of our holiday.

Is our last day here, for 6 days we had an amazing time, the staff was very friendly, and clean place, and the all-inclusive service and every activity were fantastic. The pool was clean too and I liked that the staff focused on the rules.

Genuinely a nice and clean, affordable hotel to use a base to explore salou. If I was someone who spent more time in the hotel and less on the beach and surrounding restaurants I wouldn’t recommend it. The pools are not big enough to accommodate the volume of customers and aren’t much to look at. The food isn’t worth paying any extra to be all inclusive/half board as there isn’t much choice and it isn’t the greatest, if you was a very plain eater you would find chips and occasionally pizza but again the eating area is very overcrowded and if you are someone who enjoys a range of food you would be disappointed, of the 7 nights I enjoyed one main which was paella, the rest was very underwhelming and we opted to eat out every night and majority of the mornings as you can find a lot of local breakfast options for around €6-8 anyway and dinner for 2 adults and a child in local restaurants was around €40-€70 without the big rush and queues. You get what you pay for and whilst it’s not the cheapest hotel it is affordable and you shouldn’t be put off from going, having said that, there are hotels in the local vicinity for a similar price that offer a better selection of food and a more modern appeal to the outdoor areas. The evening entertainment is okay but the entire decor of the outdoor seating could be revamped to make it more appealing as it’s quite overcrowded and low cost, sitting on old plastic chairs and tables. The arcade is genuinely not worth even visiting, it’s a few machines with not much thought or cost put into it. The rooms themselves are very nicely put together and the decor is modern, they felt clean and well maintained as did the internal side of the hotel definitely a class above what was on offer in terms of the pools and outdoor seating areas. The beds themselves was however an extremely low point for me as they was very uncomfortable and did give me quite a bad back ache every morning. The location is good, it’s one of the further hotels from the main salou beach and strip but it’s still closely situated, a 15 minute walk will get you to the beach and 7 minute walk to the strip. I wouldn’t personally stay there again unless there was a change to the external aspects of the hotel as it’s just not appealing to a family, the lifts need updating as they’re unreliable, the staff was well trained and nice. It’s a 3 star hotel ultimately but for the little bit extra to stay else where would be money well spent.

So I left a complaint review 3 days ago. Today we return to our room to be complementary bottle of champagne which is 4 euros a bottle and a note saying” please report to reception I would like to meet you in person to improve your stay for the remains days of your stay. 3 days later. So I went to reception to be told okay 1 minute 3 staff walking around behind the counter. No other guests at the desk and left to stand there for 15 minutes like an idiot. Until I decided enough is enough and walked away avoid numerous issues you couldn’t pay me to stay in this hotel again!

The Hotel was amazing, staff very friendly and helpful. There were no rush to put towels on loungers as there were plenty of beds available. No long queue at the bar or at the restaurant. Entertainment was great, mini arcade was a bonus for my 12 yr old.walk to the shops were 2 min away. I have not got one single fault with the hotel. I look forward to returning with my family.

MedPlaya Hotel Calypso, Salou.

7 night stay. 30 March to 6 April 2024

Let's start with the good, which it mostly was...

Nice, clean rooms. Big bathroom, great shower. Most rooms, if not all have balconies. Mostly friendly staff. Great swimming pools and outdoor bathing area. The food in the canteen was really good. Lockers to store your luggage on the last day, if you have late transfers. Arcade room for the kids and adults. Nice bars. ATM machine. Souvenir shop.

10-15 minute walk to the beach. Loads of shops and eateries in walking distance.

Now the bad...

No tea and coffee making facilities in the rooms. Have to pay to use the safe in your room. These are trivial, but the next one ruined our holiday. There were two parties of teenage children that arrived, both staying for three days, that arrived one after the other, effectively the whole week. You couldn't move for them. Even saw one climbing off the roof. The worst bit was dining though. All of them would go up to the hotplates together, they would constantly jump in front of you in the queue, really rude. Teachers had no control, they were sat at the other side of the canteen. Whilst they certainly weren't thugs, they were just in your way all the time. Must have been 200 of them at least.

All in all, we thought the good outweighed the bad. We would visit again. Just trying to avoid booking at Easter holidays.
