We had a wonderful stay at Starhotels Excelsior. The room was small, but comfortable and well-appointed, but what really stood out was the excellent service. We had the pleasure of meeting Andrea M, who went above and beyond to make our stay memorable. He was incredibly pleasant to interact with and gave us fantastic recommendations for dinner and how to best explore Bologna during our short visit. His kindness and professionalism truly enhanced our experience. Wishing him all the best, and many thanks for such a delightful stay!

The staff were very kind and helpful. Even though we arrived late at night and the lobby was full of people, getting our room was quick and easy. The room smelled great, was very clean, and everything was just right. The staff at the reception at 4 a.m. was especially kind and helpful. We are very grateful to have had him. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

Excellent hotel, congratulations!!! It is located right across from the main station in Bologna, and still retains its beauty, peace, and cleanliness. It looks almost renovated, the staff is very friendly, the rooms are clean and HUGE, the air conditioning works perfectly, the breakfast is very high quality and varied enough. The ratio of price and quality is top ten! The only downsides are that late at night due to the proximity of the main station, it might not be the smartest thing to sit alone (although we didn't have any problems or saw any potential problems, there were no suspicious guys, incidents, etc.) and the lack of slippers in the room (if that's a downside it is clear to you that there are none in fact). If I come back, I will stay here again.

Great value and location, extremely close to public transport (trains and buses) and a supermarket. Warm, professional, friendly staff are also highlights.
The rooms, however, are in desperate need of refurbishment. The AC barely works, even after a "fix" and room change, so their central AC is certainly insufficient and/or broken. It actually gets too hot for blankets at night. Same for the minibar/fridge, which only gets to about 16C in the best of times. Very strong smell of mold/mildew, and at that temperature I'm not surprised. It's also surprising that this hotel does not offer complimentary water of some kind.
On the bright side - rooms have nice bath tubs which I enjoy. The rooms also did not set off my dust allergies, which is rare compared to other hotels. Maybe it's the hardwood floors instead of carpets, but it works.

I came to Bologna on my first solo trip and was very nervous about being in a new place with a new language on my own. The receptionist was fantastic and made me feel very comfortable, even despite issues I was having with my card. The room is very clean and stocked with nice snacks, teas and coffees. Everything about the experience I had here in this hotel was above and beyond satisfactory and it’s definitely a safe space for solo travellers. I will be back! Thank you so much for a great first experience!

Great hotel centrally located- across from the train station and a 10 minute walk to the centre. The rooms are spacious and breakfast, which is provided by Eataly, had good selection. All staff were accommodating. Highly recommended!

Excellent hotel for a comfortable stay in Bologna. Very strategic for day train travels and close to the center. Lovely breakfast by Eataly and friendly staff. The only annoying thing was the crappy internet connection... shame that a 4 star hotel is still not in the 21st century... :-)

Amazing hotel with spacious rooms, helpful staff, great breakfast, nice amenities, and unbeatable location in one of Italy's great cities. The mattresses were comfortable, as were the sheets and the comforter. The staff were thorough and professional. 4/5 because the pillows had the shape and substance of a pancake, leading to kinked necks, and because the hot water bordered on luke-warm on some days desperately needing a hot shower and because the shower had a quarter glass panel rather than a door or curtain, which tended to make a mess of the floors.

As other reviewers have said the key thing is the location, less than 100m from the railway station. This is great if traveling by train of course, but not so good when it turns out the area around the station isn't the best part of Bologna. It is easy however to walk into the city centre. The sound proofing is good, so even when facing the station the noise level is low. Good aircon. The room was big enough and comfortable, everything worked and was very clean. The breakfast is OK but not as good as others have suggested. The juice tastes reconstituted and the hot food looked a bit sad. You have to ask for coffee, the staff seemed a bit stressed just clearing tables and did not have much time for guests. It was quite expensive as my stay included a weekend but on balance I would stay again if I was traveling by train.
