Great location at the centre of the city of Bologna with access to restaurants, shops and luxury stores. Decent apartment and friendly staff to check us in. Only downside is that the luxury flats are about 100m from the main hotel. Not convenient to be dragging suitcases around though. The surrounding area inside the building is no way as nice as the inside of the flat itself. The team have done a decent job in the inside. Comes recommended.

Amazing hotel. Full of historic artifacts from it was built. Breakfast buffet is beyond amazing. Cappucinos were smooth and nice decorated. Room was clean and bed very Supportive. Will def come again!

Highly recommend staying at the Art Hotel Commercianti when visiting Bologna. This hotel has a very unique history, reflected in its charming medieval design. Despite the history, however, the building is actually in great condition and rooms are well equipped with polished renovations, chromecast TV, and other thoughtful amenities. The included breakfast was also very impressive with a coffee bar and variety of options to choose from. Location is right next to the main church and square of Bologna

If you prefer to stay in the center of Bologna (Piazza Maggiore), this hotel is perfect. Also, the breakfast is decent and Cinzia (front desk) was very helpful (though a few others were not!).
Now for an explanation of why this isn’t a 5 star review:
1) we stayed in the “Annex”, which is a short walk from the hotel. The Annex is simply an apartment building where the hotel has two rooms (in a dingy old building!). The first room we were assigned was terrible! Cramped, noisy a/c and you could hear the neighbors quite clearly all night. The second room was much better, but we could hear our neighbors (next to us and above) going about their daily lives: loud Italian style phone calls (we could hear both parties, as they constantly used their speakerphones!), clanging of pots/pans, stomping around, etc…this happened from 6pm-3am DAILY for the entire stay…and restarted at 6am sharp!
2) because of these issues, on day 2, we asked to leave two days early (of our six night stay), and they essentially put up enough penalties & barriers to make that impossible….all while the hotel was fully booked! Why?!?
3) this last issue had nothing to do with the hotel, but on NYE, the piazza was packed with a large crowd for the festivities…but there were also many hooligans who shot off fireworks and very loud bombs (?) right outside our window. This went on til 4am! Obviously, no rest for the weary! BUT, why didn’t the hotel warn us or have extra security on that one night?! There were tons of police, but they did nothing. On our walk back to our room that evening at 9pm, we were shoved, grabbed and fireworks thrown at us! Very scary! We reported to an officer, who simply shrugged and said: this happens and they behave like animals! Great, thanks…very (un) helpful!
We will not be staying here again.

There's no better base for a few days in Bologna than right beside the imposing Basilica di San Petronio in a building that dates back to the 11th century. Request a room on the top floor with a balcony from which you can almost reach out and touch the red bricks of the church’s looming side wall. I've stayed here twice now, once on holidays with my husband and once with guests on a small-group food and wine tour I hosted and it was great both times. Excellent breakfast buffet with a good selection of sweet and savoury offerings and great coffee too.
