Reviews
As I'm landing, I receive and email from the agency (not the hotel) indicating that my reservation was cancelled due to 'no show' and that they would keep all the money invested into the reservation.
Some key issues I have with this policy and situation:
1) The idea of charging for 'no show' is absurd. I was fully charged for the entire stay and, for all I care, the room should've been kept empty.
2) I understand that hotels can set their own policies in Italy, but the hotel management did not wait 10 hours from the day before to immediately cancel my reservation and passing my room on to someone else.
3) There's policy and there's proper business conduct. A simple attempt to contact me via email or phone would have solved the issue. Instead, I am blamed for not 'telling them in advance'.
4) I would not have been as upset, if the amount charged was 1 night, which is not uncommon. Hotel Campion chose to keep all my money and to rent the room to someone else. Short-term profit but short sighted business practice.
I can't begin to express how stressful this was. I was calling the agent from the airplane who indicated that the hotel automatically did this.
Also, I want to be as fair as possible, and say that the hotel receptionist was sympathetic and tried to be helpful as much as possible.
Its a bed and breakfast stuck in the early 1990s, at best. Mold on windows and in bathrooms. Holes in sheets, non functional air conditioner/ heater, dusty vents and room, creaking floors with antique carpets.
Location isn't better than most hotels in milan as you can walk to a metro in minutes from most central hotels.
My child and I checked out the very next day, losing 3 nights prepaid and paying for another hotel. I would have left earlier if i hadnt arrived at midnight the day before! Ruined my holiday
Cons:
- dirty rooms (as in dust on almost every surface. please clean even the back of the TV, it's full of dust). Bathroom ceiling full of mould.
- poor breakfast, not much to choose from. Very crowded.
- who has 1 kg keychains anymore?
The fact is, if it was a 2 star hotel, I would have been ok, not much to expect. But a 4 ⭐??? In what universe? Would not come back again.
I appreciate that we were able to check in an hour earlier because we were exhausted and just wanted to take a nap. Our room had 3 beds and it was literally all that could fit in it. It felt very cramped. For 1 night I couldn't care less about the layout but it also meant there was little air for 3 people to breath. It wasn't too hot on the day we arrived and the windows were open. Which invited mosquitoes into the room (why are there no insect nets anywhere?). There was some ancient thermostat on the wall but it didn't do anything. We managed to get a short nap before going out and later at night AC finally kicked in. I suspect AC is centrally controlled somewhere and it only goes on at night. At least I couldn't find any controls for it in the room which would do anything.
The beds were terrible, very firm with very flat and hard pillows. The only reason I could sleep was because of exhaustion. Our room had windows into some kind of internal well-like courtyard and there was constant noise night and day. In the middle of the night, someone was loudly arguing and banging pots. Had to use ear plugs to get any sleep.
The bathroom was a bit odd. Tiny shower cabin, very slippery. Bare sink, no space to place your toiletries or cosmetics. Thin towels. Sort of institutional vibe. No amenities at all in the room, no free drinks or any other signs of hospitality.
Breakfast was disappointing. It looked exactly like on pictures but the nice-looking pastries and cakes were supermarket quality, very dry. Yogurt was not refrigerated but boiled eggs were stone cold and blueish. Very weird antiquated toaster, potential burn hazard.
For the price of Westin you're basically getting Motel 6 experience. Don't recommend to anyone traveling from the US. There are nicer hotels close to the central train station, if you're looking for a layover stay. There are no advantages staying in this hotel's area because it's far from attractions, no food nearby, and if there is a strike and metro is closed (which happened during our visit), it's a very long and hot bus ride to the center.
