Reviews
I spontaneously booked a travel to budapest and let me tell you for the price and the sudden booking it was totally worth.
The staff are very honest and nice people and help you with your questions.
The Boy at the reception charged me 30 euros too much when I was checking in, which, I at, first thought was also sketchy.
But then Daniel came to my room and apologised and gave me my money back!
The vibes here are peaceful, and it’s easy to strike a balance between socializing and enjoying your own space. The hostel seems to attract like-minded travelers who appreciate the calm environment. However, there are a couple of drawbacks. The kitchen amenities are quite basic, which can be a bit frustrating if you’re planning to prepare your own meals. A few more utensils or better cooking facilities would make a world of difference.
Another downside is the breakfast vending machine it’s often empty, which can be disappointing when you’re relying on it for a quick morning bite.
That said, the friendly staff and excellent location make Marco Polo Hostel a great base for exploring Budapest. If you don’t mind a couple of minor inconveniences, it’s a pleasant and relaxing place to stay.
I stayed at Marco Polo Hostel in Budapest and had a very disappointing experience. My toiletry bag was stolen from the shared room, including a leather bag and a Gucci Guilty Absolute perfume (large size, worth 110 €). I reported this to the staff and followed up via email, kindly requesting a reimbursement of 140 € for the stolen items.
They refused any responsibility, saying that since I didn’t lock every single item away—even basic hygiene products—the theft is entirely on me. There was no empathy or willingness to offer any solution or even partial compensation.
I would have preferred to resolve this privately, but the complete lack of accountability and communication leaves me no choice but to warn others. If you plan to stay here, be very cautious with your belongings—even basic safety is not guaranteed.
The shared bathroom in the room was poorly ventilated. The biggest problem was the heating system, which wasn't working properly, and I felt cold while sleeping. The property advertised breakfast included, but it was just sandwich and drink from vending machines. In general, hostels in Budapest should improve their breakfast offerings with pastries, cereals, hot drinks... similar to other hostels in Europe.
Overall, the hostel was fair, and the receptionist, especially Abel, was very helpful and kind.
With minor improvements it would be 5/5 but I’d recommend it if you’re aiming to explore the city through the day and come back for sleeping only.
The location is good, you can visit the city via a very comfortable walking or taking the public transport.
However, the breakfast is quite ridiculous. They give you a card, which contains three points. You can choose three items from the vending machine. Sounds like eating at step mother’s.
good for young backpackers. Overall, it's a decent option if you're looking for budget accommodation, but there's things for improvement.
