Reviews
The hotel’s location is excellent, and all the staff were incredibly kind and friendly. The rooms were generally very clean and well-maintained. For example, unlike many other places we’ve stayed, the Nespresso machine and kettle in the room were spotless and limescale-free :)
The beds were quite comfortable and the sheets were perfectly clean.
The only issue we had was the sound insulation between rooms — if you're a light sleeper, you might hear conversations or even the coffee machine from the neighboring room as if it were in your own. But if that doesn’t bother you, I think it’s a great hotel overall.
Pros: The hotel location is phenomenal. If you are willing to walk, there is plenty to see nearby. Within 30 minutes of walking you can get to Louvre, L’Orangerie, Arc de Triomphe, Grand Palais, Petit Palais, Musee d’Orsay, Rodin Museum, and Eiffel Tower. There is a park on the next block over. You can pick up grocery store food at Franprix two streets over or walk a little further to get to the bigger Monoprix grocery store. Several restaurants of different types are in the area.
The staff were welcoming and friendly. We had the pleasure of having Leon greet us on arrival. We arrived to the hotel around 10am, well before check-in. He was able to hold our bags at the hotel until we were able to check-in around 2pm. This freed up time for us to walk around for 4 hours without dragging our luggage around. Very much appreciated! Over the few days we saw him he always asked how the room was, pointed out the umbrellas at the front door that we could use when it was raining, and answered any questions we had. We were disappointed we didn’t see him the last few days of our stay. All of the front desk were polite when we saw them. Housekeeping was also wonderful.
The hotel key is a physical key on a heavy keychain that must be left at the front desk whenever you leave the hotel. At first this seemed odd, but it was actually a great idea. I never had to worry about losing the hotel key or have to deal with an electronic key card not working. It also lets the housekeeping staff know when you are out of the hotel so they know when they can clean your room without having to knock and disturb you.
The TV had “Videos On Demand” that gave you a selection of various genres of movies you could watch in English. Just keep in mind the descriptions are still in French so you might need to google it on the WiFi to know what you’re looking at. Also for some weird reason if the movie had text at the beginning to give backstory it showed up in French (this happened with Antebellum and another movie we watched). The TV channels are only in French, but we were perfectly happy watching movies so this wasn’t an issue for us.
Our room was an “Elegance with shower and balcony.” It let us choose to have two twin beds or one double bed. The room was a great size and offered nice amenities. We had a safe, robes, slippers, mini fridge with paid drink options (free waters), coffee station, bathroom toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, vanity kit, shoe shine sponge, shower cap, lotion), a corkscrew, and extra pillows in the closet. We brought the table in from the balcony to use as a tv-tray to eat and watch movies at the same time. Housekeeping kindly wiped down the table and kept it inside the room for us since they knew we were using it.
Cons: The table and chairs on the balcony fit out there but there was not much extra room. This would have been okay, except one chair was wobbly. I’m not sure if this was from the concrete being uneven or the chair legs not being even, but I didn’t feel comfortable sitting out there because I felt unstable in a wobbly chair on such a tiny balcony. (We still stood on the balcony, just didn’t use the chairs.)
Paris was in the mid-60’s (Fahrenheit) when we arrived. Since it was still considered Winter, the hotel is only in heating mode and air conditioning was not able to be used. The lowest setting on the thermostat was 16 degrees Celsius (61 Fahrenheit); the options were to keep it at 16 degrees or turn it off. Coming from a cold climate, the room felt very hot. We tried opening the door to the balcony to get fresh air in during the night; that made the temperature perfect but ended up being extremely loud due to street/traffic noise (a few sirens, a trash truck, people walking down the street talking loudly, etc.). We used earplugs on night 2 and it drowned out the noise. Things cooled down later in the week, so the temperature of the room wasn’t an issue for us after the first couple days. The website lists the heating/cooling dates if this is a concern for you (we saw this after).
I would like to start off by saying, the hotel itself is great, rooms are great and modern, the space is clean, and the location is amazing.
The daytime staff was also amazing and helpful. However, the night concierge...I do not even know where to begin. I do not even know if it would make a difference. After seeing numerous negative reviews regarding the night concierge, and then seeing that he is still employed, is quite mind boggling. It very clearly shows that management is not concerned with the concerns of their guests.
The night concierge is the MOST RUDE human being, who works in the hospitality industry, I have ever encountered. His tone and demeanor almost make you feel terrible for even asking him a question or bringing up a concern.
At the time of booking, my husband and I were unsure if a friend would be staying with us as well. However, we still booked a room that can comfortably sleep 3 people. At the time of check in, we arrived with our guest. The way the night concierge looked at us, you would think we came to cause trouble. He informed us that because our guest is not on the reservation, he is unable to stay. Okay, we did not know this policy in advance and we apologized. We even offered to pay any fee that would be associated with our guest staying with us. Mind you, on Expedia, the room is listed as sleeping 3 people, any 3 people, regardless if they are a child or adult. The night concierge did not want to be bothered and forced my husband to pay for a separate room, mind you, it is 11:00pm at this point. We are exhausted from travelling all day and the night concierge just wanted us to go away. It seemed he could not be bothered to offer any other solution or be helpful at all.
The next night, we had 2 guests that wanted to come up, not stay in, just come up to grab a few gifts and leave. The night concierge said "absolutely not, that is not allowed, they are not welcome". I am a PAYING customer, they are not staying overnight. Ridiculous. Based on the reviews, this is by far not the worst interaction a guest has had with the night concierge. The fact of the matter is that if management does not care how this person interacts with guests, what else are they not caring about?
Something to consider. Extremely rude and unhelpful person. Made our first night in Paris absolutely dreadful.
This is by far the best hotel we’ve ever stayed at in Paris. The rooms are beautifully designed, spacious, and incredibly comfortable—a rare find in this city. The management and front office staff are absolutely amazing, going above and beyond to ensure a perfect stay. The service was impeccable in every way, with attention to detail that truly made us feel at home.
As for the location, it simply doesn’t get better. Everything you could possibly want to explore is conveniently nearby, making it the perfect base for a Parisian getaway.
There is absolutely nothing to complain about. We cannot wait for our next visit to Paris, and there’s no doubt—we’ll be booking with Hotel Mathis again. Highly recommended!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
We expected a relaxing stay at what we thought was a reputable establishment, but what we got was a complete disaster. The room was advertised as a large double bed but only allowed for one person. All rooms in Paris tend to be small for double rooms, but they claimed this was against their policy.
The concierge was dismissive and completely unprofessional, leaving us with no choice but to find another hotel late at night. No refund, no empathy—just outright refusal to assist. Management’s attitude the following day was just as bad. Paris has so many wonderful hotels—this one doesn’t deserve to be on your list.
