Reviews
Hotel is of a high standard and has a classic old school feel throughout.
The rooms are a good size and the beds comfortable
Breakfast is a standout - outstanding selection of fruit cereal meat and a la carte options. They even offer caviar and champagne as part of it!
They house a 2 star restaurant which was excellent and had a lovely tasting menu. The lobby bar does really great cocktails. We visited for our anniversary and they made our day special - 2 days was not enough!
And yet, there were some aspects that were disappointing and could be improved upon. To begin with, there's a bit of arrogance at the concierge desk that contrasts to the warmth we felt at the front desk. Further, I got the sense that tips were expected (instead of appreciated) at the front entrance.
In the end, we came away very impressed. Berlin Kempinski gets the big things right. When I had a question about charges on our bill, a gentleman named Carlos from guest services called me from Germany to explain them in detail. He was very friendly and professional and a pleasure to speak with. It's this kind of service that makes you want to return.
As an avid traveler who has stayed in over 100 four- and five-star hotels, I have never witnessed such a high level of mismanagement.
I requested two interconnected rooms: one with two single beds and another with a king bed. Upon our arrival, both rooms were equipped with king beds. It took four hours for the hotel reception to determine a solution. They were unaware that one room had two single beds under a single bed sheet, which could be easily converted by changing the sheet. I had to inform them of this, and even then, it took four hours for them to send someone to check it.
On the second day, water started dripping from the ceiling in one room. The management apologized for the inconvenience and offered to upgrade our room. However, this was untrue, as the new room was actually a downgrade, moving us from the fourth floor to the second floor and from the quiet side to the main street side.
On the last day, it took two hours for them to locate the ice pack I had given to reception at check-in for freezing. We were in a hurry to reach the airport and missed breakfast while waiting for them to find the ice pack, which was needed to keep medicine cold and to wrap the luggage. Ultimately, they were unable to find it and merely apologized. When I explained that the medicine needed to be kept cold during the flight, they had no solution and did not even offer to provide a replacement ice pack from a pharmacy.
Throughout all these issues, I was unable to reach the management, as they were not present at the hotel. The staff hesitated to call the manager, as it was only 7:45 a.m., and they did not want to disturb them, even though I was at risk of missing my flight due to their disorganization.
Overall, this was the worst-managed hotel I have ever experienced, which is unfortunate given its prime location and reputable name.
