There are only a few houses in Germany that can still maintain the standards of the Excelsior Ernst. Even the Hansestube has spoiled us with all its art. No house in Cologne can compete here. Dear Excelsior Hotel Ernst Team, After an incredibly long train journey and many hardships, I arrived in Cologne at 7am. It is raining and I am in a bad mood, to put it in good German. Nothing is open and I know you can tell I have a long way to go. After some thought, I decide to call the Excelsior Hotel Ernst and ask if I can come in for breakfast. The friendly lady on the phone asks what day the reservation is for and I tell her that I am standing outside in the rain and want breakfast immediately. I have rarely received such a perfectly to-the-point answer and am kindly invited to come in and have breakfast. The breakfast staff then greeted me warmly, offered me coffee and egg dishes and immediately began to make my day better. I immediately remembered reading what the founder of the hotel in 1863 really wanted. Train travellers are warmly welcomed, pampered and waited upon by their hosts. If Karl Ernst had seen this morning, as he was certainly doing from somewhere on high, he would have been proud of each and every one of you. They are wonderful hosts, but hosts with a heart. One of my favorite places to stay in Europe. Old school attention to detail and high "guest conscious" service levels. A genuine pleasure within walking distance to my Köln go-to destinations.

I have been staying at the Excelsior for over 30 years. It is always a pleasure. The service is excellent. The rooms are beautiful. The breakfast is memorable. The location is perfect. (next to the Cathedral) I look forward to my next visit. Thank you to Joseph and the wonderful staff for making my stay wonderful.

Visited Koln with family. This hotel is perfect in so many ways. Everything they do is elegant and efficient. The staff always smiled and spoke very good English. It sits directly across and basically in the shadow of the Cathedral and train station. Great location.

Stayed here for over a week in a Junior Suite. All our expectations were exceeded. The hotel felt comfortable and staff were lovely. The room was spacious and clean. The food in the bar and restaurant were very good although quite expensive. The location is as good as it gets in Cologne - right next to the train station and in front of the cathedral.

A negative was that the in-house Michelin restaurant was closed during the stay and some members of staff didn’t know about it. There was also a lot of private chatting among the staff in the bar and one member was occasionally swearing under his breath - obviously not in itself a problem but the layout of the bar made it impossible to ignore and made service feel a little less professional.

Overall, a very positive experience and if you ignore the high prices for food, the price for value was excellent. We will definitely return.

Just stayed here two nights. Had a great time. The staff is top notch. Everyone is super friendly.

Location is great. You can walk to everything not to mention it's 100m to the Dom.

Room was excellent, clean. Nice amenities. The walk in shower with the rain shower head was great. Water gets super hot and greater water pressure.

Also treat yourself to the chocolates!
