Reviews
Friendliest staff imaginable - especially Stanislava who I was speaking to on my last night!
Thank you for a great stay!
Positives: very well situated for both the train station and main sites, with a good breakfast and a good sized room and bathroom with friendly staff:
Negatives: it can be a bit noisy in the rooms (little street noise but limited internal sound proofing). I arrived at 1pm checkin time but the room was not ready so waited around 30 minutes, the staff did however put my bags in the room so a minor inconvenience.
The check-in process was very long and we were kept waiting for 2 hours, constantly saying 15 minutes later. The tall, thin man on duty was constantly shouting loudly at the receptionist girl in front of us. As a hotel manager, I found this very unprofessional and disrespectful I hope the owner of the hotel take attention this . We wanted to print something but the computer did not work. Even though I reserved a French bed, I was given a twin and they did not want to change the room even though I requested. The room was very small. Breakfast was very poor. The woman working at breakfast was behaving very aggressively towards us. When a little hot water spilled on the floor, she passed a mop over my feet. Even though I am very polite, it is not nice to be rude. It is very disrespectful and unacceptable for the staff to speak to us in their own language even though they know that we do not understand. If there are no slippers in the room, you can at least sell them.
The rest: My room in the 2nd floor was surprisingly large, which was surprising for Madrid Central. However, it needs fresh paint as there was many marks and stains on the wall. The bed was not the most comfortable and quite small. The shower was TINY, and if you are not a smaller-than-average human you will struggle to fit. The caulk around the shower also was quite gross. The common areas are dimly lit, and drab. The door did not securely latch and had to be slammed to catch. Breakfast was just ok, and located in another building. The second morning I opted to skip it.
When I return to Madrid I will likely find a different similarly priced hotel.
The hotel itself sits on Plaza Santa Ana in the Las Letras section of Madrid, which is a 5-minute walk to Sol and a 10-minute walk to Cheuca. The plaza is quaint and full of several great restaurants/bars where you can enjoy the a coffee or Rioja.
The Lavapies and La Latina neighborhoods just to the south provide a very nice reprieve from the busier, touristy neighborhoods, and are home to some wonderfully ethnic cuisine (Indian, Lebanese, various Asian) if you need a break from traditional Spanish fare.
The rooms are on the smaller side, but quite comfortable if your primary mission is to enjoy the marvelous City of Madrid. That being said, if you’re a party of two, the rooms can feel a bit claustrophobic on a rainy day or if you have to stay inside. Beds are either two twins or a full (which can seem small if you’re used to a Queen or higher).
In terms of appointments, there are two bottles of water in a wall-mounted bar (no other beverages), a flat-screen television, a built-in closet, and bathrooms with stand-up showers (excellent water pressure). The hotel provides basic bathroom amenities. Exterior rooms have windows that open on to the street or Plaza Santa Ana. Sheets and towels were changed each day.
There is an elevator onsite, though we just used the stairs. The front lobby is attended 24 hours, and the front desk employees (I think we encountered all of them in 10 days) were the definition of kind. They would always greet us entering and exiting the hotel, and were more than happy to respond and help with special requests, such as when we needed to print out the results of our COVID-19 tests prior to leaving for the airport. We really, sincerely, appreciated their hospitality.
We paid for the breakfast package, which is served from 8-11 a.m. at a location two doors down from the hotel on the same street and is highly recommended. It’s an absolutely phenomenal breakfast, including eggs, bacon, sausage, baguettes and other breads & pastries, Spanish meats and cheeses, yogurt (plain and flavored) with many topping choices, fruits, juices, and self-serve made-to-order coffee. Apple, the lovely breakfast attendant, helps you with anything you might need. This is really a great way to get your day started in Madrid.
A word of caution: the hotel does have a problem with internet connectivity. As someone who’s pretty savvy with networks, it’s clearly not about speed, as you get pretty solid 80 mbps when you’re close to the router. Rather, the hotel is in an old building with lots of thick concrete/brick walls and no repeaters. The signal, by the time it reaches many of the rooms, is weak and unstable. Many times we had speeds less than 750 kbps. Repeater modules up and down the hallways would very quickly (and relatively cheaply) fix this problem. That being said, we had problems with the internet nearly every day.
Lastly, some of the interior rooms (and hallway) are plagued by the odor of fish cooking from the tapas restaurant on the street level. It appears their kitchen exhaust goes up through their roof and in the interior courtyard of the hotel. We highly recommend an exterior room for ventilation reasons alone.
