Absolutely Unacceptable and Unsafe Experience

My partner and I had a deeply disturbing experience at this hotel. At 1 am, we were abruptly woken up by a strange man entering our room. This man had been given our room number and door code by the hotel reception staff. He only left after I confronted him, naked and shouting, and his only response was, "Sorry! Sorry! I have a pin code!" This is beyond unacceptable.

The situation was terrifying and could have been much worse had I not been there to confront the intruder. The thought of what could have happened if my girlfriend had been alone in that room is chilling.

To make matters worse, the manager's response was disgraceful. Instead of taking responsibility, he tried to emotionally blackmail us into not leaving a bad review, stating that he would fire the receptionist if we did. He also dismissed our concerns by saying nothing bad had happened, and therefore, a refund wasn’t justified. Nothing bad happened? Being woken in the middle of the night by a stranger barging into our room, causing us to have to physically confront him while naked, is a severe breach of safety and privacy. I would love to see how this "man" would react if he was in this situation and had to protect his partner.

The way this incident was handled by the staff and management was appalling. I strongly advise anyone considering staying here to think twice, especially if you value your safety and privacy. This hotel clearly does not.

On our last night in Rome I received a missed call and text message from the Hotel Canova. See below:

Dear Kevin,

If you want, you can also leave the city tax in cash in your room, so our staff can take it tomorrow in the morning.
The total amount is 72€ (6€ per person per night)
Room 101: 2 people for 3 nights= 36€
(Children under 10 years old are exempt from the payment)
Room 206: 2 people for 3 nights= 36€

Best Regards,
Hotel Canova***

As you can see from the text message above from the Canova Hotel I was given an option to pay the city taxes before I checked out. I received the message after I was not able to receive the previous messages - understand that my US cell phone service is quite poor in many areas of Rome. This was the case. As soon as I realized I missed a call, I called back to see about the matter. The Canova Employee notified me that she disconnected my room code from the hotel and the only way to restore it was to leave my dinner and pay it immediately. The employee stated that if I didn't pay immediately, I wouldn't be able to get to my room and she would get fired. I have three young children and wanted to make sure we had access to our room. I abandoned my family at dinner and ran to the hotel (25 minute run from the restaurant back to the hotel) to pay the taxes - they let me in the door because they actually deleted my code. I explained that I have been able to pay city taxes before checking out in several countries and also that I spoke and greeted both employees at the Canova Hotel during the stay without a prompt to immediately pay the taxes. Instead the employee yelled at me and told me that I ignored her and I am the reason she is fired. She was very offensive and not reasonable even after I did what was asked of me - payed the taxes. I did not receive any support even though I received notification that stated that I could pay the taxes before I checked out. Please address this matter with me as this is very disturbing service behavior. This experience was very poor and should be taken seriously.

Additionally the hotel was dirty, had ants and, chipped tiles and mold in the bathroom. The window to the room did not open all of the way and the fridge was dirty. The hotel did not have coffee or tea in the room and was very poor quality. The Canova Hotel experience put a damper on our holiday.

Offers convenient self-check-in with room access codes, allowing flexibility for arrivals. Its ideal location near major attractions and the metro ensures easy exploration of the city.

Terrible shower. Horrible elevator. Pay tax with cash, but offer no change. No breakfast when advertised. Expensive.

No breakfast- don't expect even free tea or coffe in room. Room super small, bathroom like closet. If you more then 6,5 ft tall and over 150 pounds - you will not be able to fit there.
Very old equipment- mold around windows and in bathroom.

Very nice location, if you like to explore the city on foot, you're maximum 15/20 mins away from the most famous monuments. Reception was nice and friendly but it's open from 8am to 9pm after which you use a code to enter the hotel (and room).

However the room is quite basic. Sockets are not the european standard ones but are the type L ones so make sure you get a worldwide adaptor beforehand. We went in February and the room was quite cold, there's only a cooling a/c on the wall (at least we couldn't figure out how to get it warm, if even possible) but there's a heating towel rack in the bathroom, so to not freeze I kept that on constantly to make the room liveable for me (I suffer the cold, my fiancé was alright instead).
No kettle or complimentary teas/coffee. They provide towels and soaps.

There was a mini fridge in the room that made a constant noise for which I wasn't able to sleep to the point I had to buy earplugs, other than that there's another weird appliances or electricity noise, so I recommend getting earplugs beforehand if you're a light sleeper.

The elevator is incredibly small (2 ppl max) and can feel like it's going to break everytime you take it. I advice taking the stairs.

You also have to pay a city tax of 6 euros per night per person that wasn't previously specified, cash only.
The breakfast area is closed for refurbishment.

No breakfast available. Extremely small elevator. Would not help us call a taxi (when you call it is all in Italian so we needed help). First room extremely small and by the elevator so they moved us to a larger room, that room bigger but bed was better in the first. Location too far from city center but near the train station if that matters. Has a market right next door which is nice.

We stayed here in September. There were four of us traveling and had two rooms. We stayed there for three nights.
First of all we booked this hotel for it's location and the fact that they offered breakfast.
When we checked in we were told that there was no breakfast due to renovation. But we were told there was a small store right next to the hotel where we could get something to eat.
On the second day we went to the top floor patio and could see the breakfast dining room area. There was no sign of any renovation nor did we see any sort of renovation going on while we we there.
There was no coffee pot available in the room and no coffee before 8am at the front desk. We were told we could order coffee after 8am.
We found the front desk staff didn't seem to care one way on the other about the guests.
The room that we had was small but comfortable. The bathroom was a good size but the shower was about the size of a phone booth. Try taking a shower in a phone booth. Don't drop the soap.
The front desk and front lounge was only open from 8am to 9pm.
The hotel and rooms were clean.
The walls in our room were very thin. You could hear everything that was going on in the next room.
The hotel is about a good 15 minute walk to the Colosseum.
There are lots of fine restaurants within a short walk We found one called Non c’è trippa pe’ gatti. ( Don't Step on the Cat. ) On Urbana.
Great food super service and very reasonable. Would highly recommend.
All in all an OK hotel. Would I stay there again? NO.

Cute little hotel. Lots of charm. A good area with plenty of cafes. How wild is it to turn a street corner and see the coliseum boom, right there in front of you!

Best service, staff is very nice and suggested lot of excellent recommendations around the city. Rome is cozy but neat, clean, and modern.
