We had a great stay here at the Barcelo Occidental Caribe. The rooms were clean, we were able to get into all of the restaurant which was a great experience. The games were fun, and Valentin put on a good show for the group, with an appreciated variety of languages for the multi-lingual crowd. Looking forward to visiting again when the cold weather hits next year

The resort is located in a nice location, the beach is clean, water is clear, pool seems well maintained. This is just about the best part of the resort. The food is ok, not much selection but it is flavourful and fresh. The resort itself is definitely older and it shows with how it’s been maintained. The card locks on my room door has rarely worked, the room itself was half cleaned when we checked in. The floor was dirty, no towels in the bathroom, and water leaking from the ceiling in the bathroom. The service here is by far the worst I’ve experienced at any resort in Dominican, I’ve stayed at 3 stars where the service is worth 5 stars and this service reflects what I’d expect at a 2 star resort. It’s almost impossible to get any help from staff and the overall negative morale is evident in every area, from reception to the restaurants, buffets, bars, housekeeping, etc. The facilities are not big enough to accommodate how many rooms they have and how many reservations they have at a time. If you’re looking to be on a nice beach, stay at any of the neighbouring hotels. It’s very disappointing to have such a negative experience.

The resort is great. Very accessible, pool is lovely and great temperature. Room is spacious and the whole resort is clean. Beautiful beach and friendly staff. The animation team are brilliant. Always happy and positive, bringing a friendly and enthusiastic vibe to the whole resort. Couldn’t recommend enough

This was a great experience! The resort itself was gorgeous, with great restaurants (French and Italian were our favourite), the buffet was great- there was always something we found to eat. Our AC in our room broke one night and we asked Housekeeping to fix it when we were out for the day and they did! So that was lovely. It was a great trip- well worth the price

The hotel needs some renovations, the room had a small leak and to flush the toilet sometimes you had to do it manually but it wasn’t a big deal for me wasn’t a problem at all, the air conditioning was not that powerful but we had a pleasant temperature despite everything, the food was good we always found good food during the 15 days we were there, The chef prepared two very delicious gluten-free pizzas for my daughter who is allergic to gluten, the staff and the chef were quite polite and willing to help, on weekends it was very crowded, and you had to wait in line but that is something I have always seen in budget hotels, The hotel facilities are large and offer many things. In the afternoon there were long queues for drinks. I don't drink alcohol but many times I had to wait in long queues for a coffee. This is something that could be improved. The hotel is on the front line of a spectacular beach. There was only seaweed one day and the other days the beach was impressive. The hotel offers the best and so does its staff, the problem is those who stay at the hotel, people from all over Latin America and locals, unfortunately some do not know how to behave, at lunch and dinner time they get in front of the lines, because they are older, because they are pregnant, or because they use a cane and the worst of all is that they get in with all their family and friends, that is something shameful, the lack of education of many people who stay at the hotel, in Europe older people get in line, but not in that hotel. One day I left a new sunscreen on the lounge chair and it was stolen, I'm sure who it was because I saw a child approach and then they left, so if you go do not leave your things unattended especially on the beach, many people wait in lines for up to 5 drinks which often the line does not move if you want to drink something, I saw people steal the teas, sugar and take the tupperware full of food because most people are only staying one night at the hotel, you really are going to see people with little or no education, also in the showers at the beach or pool you are standing in line there is only one person in front of you, friends and family come and do not wait in line, but this is not the fault of the hotel, nor the staff, I reserved the restaurants the Japanese, French, Dominican, and Mexican were quite good and with good service, depending on tastes I liked the Dominican and French. Personally, my family and I had a great time. There were many activities that we enjoyed very much, I loved the beach and the excellent coffee, and very good animation team. The price was quite reasonable for a place like that. I have tried to make my comment as sincere as possible in order to help you make a good choice without any surprises, especially if you are visiting from Europe.

Honestly, all these “bad reviews” are just angry people expecting more than they should. This resort is pretty great, still needs some work on somethings but overall this place is great to have a great time and rest.

An advice coming from me is to pay a bit more for the Premium Experience because that will give you access to tons of things even leveled drinks if you like, also to make reservations you have priority somehow, food at restaurants is pretty good especially Tokyo.

Again, I do not understand why there’s so many bad reviews. Don’t get your hypes up on food because buffets aren’t usually the best either. But this food is pretty good just don’t go too hype on it. Pool is nice and so is the beach.

Anyways, thanks to Anna at the check out, Omar at the bar, Luis at the bar as well, and many others. Thanks for making this small vacation a great time for us. We’ll be back soon when we can afford it again haha!

Not sure why there's so many bad reviews of this place, me and my friend had a great time. We paid a little more for the superior room so maybe that's why.

Service was great and cleaners were lovely and kind. Lots of propinas were left and water and towels were always restocked (as well as the barceló and coca-cola

If you plan on booking here I would suggest you read!!

Let’s be honest if you have travelled anywhere outside of North America you need to understand life is slightly different and you will need to navigate.

The pros - the outside of the resort is amazing, the beach, the pool great. Highly recommend spending a bit extra and having a beach front dinner it’s excellent. Pizza at lunch is a must, Japanese and French, if you eat at the buffet line up at the hot plates. Learn to tip it goes along way, everyone was kind and helpful. The rooms were fine, for the cost - sure could use some upgrades but nothing horrible that the view didn’t take away. The pool and resort activities were excellent and lots always happening.

The cons - there is really no amenities in the room, no beer or alcohol, cleaning needs improvement the girl came in the room daily and made the beds but often left towels on the floor and did not even take out garbage. There were no decor on the bed daily and even though we said we were on a honeymoon nothing was done for us. Our biggest complaint was the buffet, all other things were not a big deal. I think the owner / managers need to read the consistent feedback and implement some tweaks overall it’s worth the price of paradise for a week. If you are a complainer and have high expectations I’d suggest perhaps you move along. If you want a week away and can navigate the Caribbean time, and enjoy the pool and beach amenities you will be fine!

I recently took my family here and I wish I could say it was a great experience, but I can't. I have been to DR previously and loved it so wanted to share it with my family but it was a completely different trip. We started the first day with a room that had no flushing toilet and stunk like sewage. The air conditioning did not work and there was no fan. We paid to upgrade our room to a family room and on the surface seemed better but besides the size it wasn't. Again we had issues with the plumbing throughout our stay and our last night had no flushing toilet again. No one came to fix it regardless of asking repeatedly and being told 4+ times someone would be "right there". The air conditioning also never worked in this room and no fan. The lock in the kids side was broken so not very secure. Finally, the roof in the kids room leaked, not just a couple drips but poured through the ceiling, so bad we had to put down all the towels and ice bucket to stop it from flooding the room, again no one ever came. The housekeeping staff left the towels on the ground the next day and didn't give us new ones, so not amazing there either. We ran out of toilet paper twice and had to ask housekeeping after they had already cleaned our room then just went to the cart and got it ourselves. The plumbing was obviously as issue throughout as I repeatedly went into the public use bathrooms only to turn around because they were filled with human waste (poor reflection on the guests as well to continue using a facility that clearly is out of order). For the most part the staff was friendly but again, took multiple times of asking for something from multiple staff to actually get helped. This was especially prevalent during meals when you couldn't find a clean table or get a glass of water until you were finished eating. Perhaps there needs to be more staff available in order to make things run more smoothly and help the existing staff so they are not run off their feet.
The grounds were beautiful and the pools were well maintained, the beach was lovely.
The food was not exactly superb with some questionable textures but you can't expect the same food as back home, different ingredients and availability makes it a challenge. but we found something to eat every meal and never went hungry. I will say my son loved the chicken station and ate that pretty much every night.
Overall, I wish this was a better experience, this was my kids first time visiting another country and I had high hopes. Not having a flushing toilet is not acceptable for the amount of money you pay for these vacations.

The beach is large with lots of chairs, it’s honestly spectacular. The pools are a great layout for families although they were far from clean and if you want a shady area to sit you have to go out at about 5 am to mark your spot.
The food was enjoyable and the a la cart restaurants were very good. It was difficult to get an early reservation in order to eat before the babies had to go to bed, you have to go down to guest services very early and request this and then go back later in the day to confirm.
The service was overall quite poor, that’s not to say all employees were unhelpful but it was a mixed bag depending on who you got.
I had to fill bottles of milk for my baby and many employees would give me a carton for the room but I did have one woman flat out refuse and only offered me a cup which wouldn’t fill even the whole bottle. Also there is no non-dairy milk option so if you or your child has an allergy this would be an issue.
We were travelling with family and young babes so we asked for rooms to be close together ahead of time and were refused any help both ahead and at the resort when we landed. We also asked to reserve cribs and we’re told they were first come first serve so we had to bring our own travel cribs to ensure our babes had a safe place to sleep. If we didn’t ask ahead we could have shown up with no where for our babies to sleep.
The rooms are dated which wasn’t a big deal to us but the toilets didn’t flush very well and the room wasn’t always cleaned daily, we each had a day where a room wasn’t cleaned or towels weren’t replaced.
Overall the resort is a great size and the pools and amenities are great for young families but I would say the service really needs to level up to match the same standard.
