Thank you Hotel La Rovere for accommodating me on my first trip to Rome! After a long journey, arriving to a clean, air-conditioned room felt amazing. I enjoyed the minibar provided in the room. The breakfast buffet saved me when restaurants were closed on Italian holiday.

Location is conveniently near Vatican City and Piazza Navona, along with bus stops that are 5 minutes away. As a solo traveler, I appreciated the friendly service from staff and safety of the area.

This hotel does not live up to a 4-star rating. The only real positive is its location, about 20–30 minutes from Rome’s main attractions. We stayed in four different hotels during our trip to Italy, and unfortunately, this was the worst. The reception was unwelcoming from the start, and on our first night there was a major power outage—reportedly due to explosions in the building—leaving us without electricity or AC for about five hours. Hot water was also unavailable for another six hours afterward. During this time, the staff seemed overwhelmed and unprepared to handle the situation.

We had read mixed reviews and decided to give it a chance, but that was a mistake. I’ll definitely take negative reviews more seriously in the future. Save your money and book elsewhere—there are much better hotels nearby.

I enjoyed my stay in the hotel, which offers a bit of peace and quiet in this bustling city. We were able to walk everywhere, the service was polite and efficient, the rooms nicely appointed and clean, breakfast above average (for my taste). The look and feel is individual rather than standardised, which I prefer. Not too many rooms, so it never felt crowded. The immediate surrounding feels a little run down, but in no way dangerous as other reviewers have described. Overall very good value for money at the height of the season. I‘d be happy to return.

Booked this hotel for a 5 night stay and it should not be considered a 4 star hotel. Will first add the AC is locked at 20 degrees. We paid 400 euro a night for a room that had locked AC temp (then no AC), very low water pressure in the shower, and dirty walls. A taxi cannot get to the hotel entrance be prepared for that. Had to check out early due to no AC. While they claimed the no AC is out of their control. They kept telling us it would be fixed tomorrow until finally saying the compressor blew and there’s no replacement in all of Rome. They gave us the option of refunding the night we didn’t stay or 100 euros off all the nights we had no AC. At first they said we can have free breakfast. Which is 22 euro a person? Not sure how that’s compensation for booking a hotel with AC in June for a reason. They would not compensate for the days we did stay since we picked to have our last night refunded and had to book a new hotel last minute. During check out when we handed the room key back they forgot to ask for the city taxes which they claim needs to be given in cash. They did end up charging our card on file. So why say it needs to be given in cash? The owner also claims to know no English but spoke perfectly fine and chose not to explain why I can’t have both the refund and 100 euros off. Had I known the AC would not be fixed after the first night with no AC I would have changed hotels and asked for a refund of the remaining nights. Now because I was giving them the benefit of the doubt they don’t want to compensate.

RUN AWAY!!!!! I have traveled to Europe many times and never had an experience this awful. We arrive in Rome to Hotel La Rovere. Upon checking in, they couldn’t find my reservation. Once they did, they asked for my passport and goes - “by the way, there is no AC (it’s 90+ degrees in Rome), Service or WiFi right now”. They sent no email or did not call to inform my group of this information. The front desk was not even helpful in advising us of another hotel. We left, booked another hotel and the best thing they did was offer a full refund.

In addition, taxis can’t get you to the front entrance - so you carry your bags through an alley way and up stairs where 4 men were drinking liter beers blocking the top.

DO NOT BOOK.

We pivoted to Hotel Santa Maria (not too far). PHENOMENAL experience, location & service. 10/10.

DO NOT STAY HERE. My friend invited me on a trip with her to Rome and she had booked this hotel well in advance. Unfortunately she had made this reservation well in advance and did not see the terrible reviews they’ve been receiving as of late. My friend booked a superior room with a balcony and the room smelled like cigarette smoke and the AC did not work. When we asked to be moved they said the only other room that was a superior was “under construction”. This was never communicated and I had a great time being woken up at 7 AM with construction noise above us. When we complained the girl at the front said that “they usually wait until everyone wakes up to start”. Strange because I was not awake at 7 AM. Management is NEVER at this hotel. So do not book a non refundable room because no matter the issue no one will reach out to you or help resolve it. Unfortunately front desk is not equipped to deal with these issues and yet management is never available. Pretty shady tactics used by these people. I would not book here if I were you. I usually try not to be too critical but the only person that was truly helpful was a front desk named Rolando. However he is limited to what he can do. We were eventually moved to a regular room however it’s been days since we checked in and a manager has not refunded us the difference for the room rates. Very sketchy. There is a supervisor that we spoke to and he literally laughed in our face when we asked for a refund. I have him on video admitting to it however it is too long to post here. There’s so many hotels to choose from my suggestion is to stay far far away. If you’ve already booked, try to cancel. At this point this stay will be disputed through the bank since the manager/ owner is supposedly on vacation and not answering calls. Don’t think that’s true which is why I am suggesting anyone to stay far away.

Edit: I’m editing this review just to highlight the fact that this hotel has a large number of 1-2 star reviews and the managers response is always in some way calling the reviewer a liar. It’s actually hilarious if you look through their responses. Also we were assigned the balcony rooms the first night and one had a broken AC and the other smelled like cigarette smoke. Regardless of your policy there are guests who will smoke and that is your responsibility as a manager to check these rooms and charge those guests for damaging the room in that way. Not ignore it and stick the next person in there and then call them a liar when they’re dissatisfied. The rest of our stay we were assigned to rooms that did not fit the booking because the other balcony rooms were “under construction”.

Have the life you deserve ✌🏼

Every bad review here is true. horrible staff, asked for card details before check in. said noise isolation was good but can hear anything and everything that goes on outside the room, in general very rude staff, only one man was nice to us during our stay, breakfast isn’t good either, book a different hotel.

This hotel has exceeded my expectations for how badly a hotel can be run. We booked our rooms over a year ago after extensive research and this place had good reviews, so we went for it. This hotel experience has been bad enough for us to consider ending the trip early. We got the superior balcony rooms and they ushered us into the “old” section of the hotel, so not one that was photographed on the website, meaning this room was a shock to see. The room smelled of cigarettes (like the carpet and the bedding and the drapes) and the air conditioner did not work the ENTIRE night, our thermostat said it was set to 19 degree Celsius, but never made it down past 75-78 degrees Fahrenheit. We communicated this frustration and frank disappointment to the front desk, it wasn’t a room we picked off the website and the one that was given smelled and was hot, but also right in a construction zone that began work at 7:30AM. The front desk and supervisor who spoke with us on the phone could not have been less helpful, the supervisor laughed loudly at me and said “I don’t know what they do in your country” and “you have all the problems in the world” and “go find somewhere else then”. The front desk just kept saying there’s nothing she can do and to deal with it, and maybe the manager would be back on site in 48 hours to assist, but no promises. They moved us to another room after much protest as they saw fit to keep our money despite all the issues that were on the hotel side of things, but the new room still has severe air conditioning issues. You can find 100 other hotels in the city with better management and better rooms than this, don’t book here, and definitely don’t stay in room 303. This is our 4th time staying in Rome, but the 1st time any of this is happening to us. Save yourself the money and go elsewhere.

We are so glad we decided on staying at Hotel Rovere! It was the perfect location for us, it’s not in the center of crowded rome but close enough that we could walk to any of the major sightseeing locations comfortably. We were super close to vatican city! Less than 15 minute walk. The room we got was the basic room and it was perfect. The bathroom was large and shower spacious. The room was always cool when we would get back from a long day in the heat. The hotel itself is super chic and we felt very safe and comfortable there. The concierge was super helpful when we had to get a taxi at 5:30am. We 100% would stay at this hotel again. No regrets or complaints here!
